Weird how MJF and Stoltz look alike

They could be brothers.
It seems as if Marty had to have THAT specific look for the filmmakers.
Why?
Couldn't another look work? (like Macchio, Sheen, Howell, etc)

reply

I think Stoltz would've done a good job if MJF was unavailable. He's a good actor who's done a lot of underrated film.

reply

I agree.
But the production was very unhappy with his take on Marty, they wanted more comedy and less seriousness.

reply

That's right. Credit to Stoltz for not bitching about his rejection, which many actors would not have gotten over. He just got on with acting in films. Always liked him.

reply

It sounded like he was pretty deadly serious when he was off camera, getting very method about the part. It sometimes lead to tension with other actors. Thomas F. Wilson came close to punching him at some point.

That probably didn't help make good comedy either.

reply

Stoltz is a great actor, but there is a reason, why he is not known as a comedy actor. I don't see him working in this movie, except the whole thing had become a big chunk more drama. I also highly doubt it had become a cult classic, more an obscure 80s movie, only some people remember.

reply

Definitely would not have been a cultural phenomenon without MJF. It’s like The Terminator without Arnold. You need an iconic figurehead to front a movie that defines pop culture.

reply

He's got the right look, but i'm guessing he looked really goofy on a skateboard.

reply

In the We Don't Need Roads book, it was claimed that Eric gave the film a "punk edginess" when he was on the skateboard.

reply

Why do you guess so?
He was a short kid, like MJF, that's a cool look on a skateboard.
