He lets his temper get the best of him

Marty lets Doc use the sleep inducer on Jennifer

Marty plans on pretending to take advantage of his mother to get his parents together

He, rightfully or not, ruins Biff's life on multiple occasions

Follows along on Doc's bizarre plans instead of putting an end to the madness

reply

Marty reacts to ‘chicken’ in movies II and III but makes absolutely no indication that something like that would bother him in the first film.

"Marty takes credit for Chuck Berry's 'Johnny B. Goode'"

this 100%

reply

Does he take credit? Or just play it. I never heard him say, "this is my song," or "I wrote this last week," or anything similar.

think about it like this:

Marty performs the song first.
hence erasing Chuck's original performance/recording

; )

Does it? A song played at a High School prom? No one at that prom has any idea who Marty is. They don't know where the song comes from. It wasn't recorded, as far as we can tell. It seems to me Chuck will still take credit (rightfully) for the song when it is performed to a formal audience and recorded.

Agree. He didn't interrupt anything Berry was doing, really. And he doesn't take credit, just says it's an oldie where he's from.
The implication is that he inspires Chuck to write the song... so Chuck goes on and writes the song he was going to write anyway.

But, don't forget, Chuck only really hears the back end of the song, really just Marty's solo. So when you think about it, inspiration, song, lyrics and all are still intact with Chuck.

Good observation, blindfolded
