The feeling and atmosphere of the following films are similar to me, how would you describe the aesthetic and atmosphere of the films listed, and can anyone add to this list? (especially but not limited to nocturnal films set in 80s manhattan)
okay, as usual, most recommendations are *beep* and has nothing common with After Hours. I mean, Batman Returns, for example?
check out COLD DOG SOUP. just like After Hours, it's the story of an average guy getting sucked into the dark, weird, and wild underbelly of the nocturnal city. it even has a promiscous, hot, tall brunette too.
I'm watching Walk Of Shame with Elisabeth Banks. Same Idea. Person gets stuck in the far side of the city, lost in a really crappy neighborhood, with no money and no brains to find her way back. Whole movie is her trying to find her way to work on time the next day all alone. One bad thing after another happens. It doesn't *feel* like the same movie because it mostly takes place in the daylight. The plot is almost identical though. There's even Cheech and Chong type characters played as two cops chasing her around the city.
Another movie that does *feel* like After Hours is Quick Change with Bill Murray. Bill and his two bank robbing buddies get lost in Queens, NY in the middle of the night trying get to Kennedy Airport to catch their getaway plane.
Wong Kar Wai's Fallen Angels is a lot like it, and so is Chungking express to a lesser extent. I can tell a lot of those movies have a groovy night in the city vibe to them, and props for mentioning Akira, check out Ghost in the Shell as well.
Other than Adventures in Babysitting which has already been mentioned several times, I'd have to go with the John Belushi / Dan Ackroyd film NEIGHBORS. One of my all time favorites.
