Why Moonlighting still isn't available to stream: Blame music rights costs

https://www.thewrap.com/why-moonlighting-not-streaming-anywhere/

Bruce Willis' recent aphasia announcement led to many reminiscing about his starring role opposite Cybill Shepherd in the 1980s comedy Moonlighting. But the show isn't available to stream. Why? Because Disney owns the show and is apparently unwilling to pay the "cost prohibitive" rights to the music from the series.

whats the point of them owning it then?

I am assuming... When they were produced back in the 80s they were not expecting it to be released on DVDs and streaming platforms... a lot of the music used existed before the show and the studio paid for the rights for broadcast only or also reruns at most... and probably had to pay each time the episode aired (maybe a lower fee after the original premiere broadcast).

I assume before the existence of DVDs most TV series were not released like full seasons, some rare handful of episodes would be released on VHS at most for some series... but not full seasons. VHS and other similar formats from the 80s and 90s were basically only used for movies.

Someone need to explain to me why would they need to pay for the music again ? they did this a few 80's/70's shows that got on DVD and it pissed me off and why it isn't happening for releases in Asia/Europe ?

reply

Regional rights I guess? Contracts must be very specific of where and on what type of device-form can it be distributed.

Same reason American Dreams is not available. They can't even get the rights to the music used for DVD's.
