Madison? That's not a name!

...as Tom Hanks says, when she names herself after Madison Avenue.

I remember how back in the 80's, Madison really did seem like a ridiculous first name for a female... (it had only been considered a LAST name generally)...

And today it seems to be one of the most common girls' names. Did SPLASH have something to do with this?

The war is not meant to be won... it is meant to be continuous.

Probably, but, The Dain Curse, 1929 novel by Dashiell Hammett, has a male character named Madison Andrews.

So this isn't the first use as a first name.

reply

Not the first, of course, but it was very uncommon in the 1980s. And even more uncommon as a woman's name. It really did sound bizarre when I saw the film as a teenager. Today nobody gets the joke. ;)

I believe the proper spelling these days is 'Madysyn'. Get with the times!!

I don't see anything wrong with choosing a name based on a favorite movie or literary character. My daughter's name came from a popular movie (not this movie). It was the first time I had ever heard of it for a girl.

"Madison" is one of those idiotic girls' names of the last thirty or so years that uses a geographic location (Brooklyn, etc.) or a last name for a first name. Brainless parents.

I like brainless girls.

"Maddie," for short, sounds good though.

I've seen this listed as a goof when discussing Fear the Walking Dead. The main character's name is Madison, but she's too old to have this name, exactly because of this reason.

Girls weren't named Madison until after the movie Splash, 1984.

FtWD is set in 2010 and Madison is in her mid 40s, putting her birth date 1970 or earlier.
