Madison? That's not a name!

...as Tom Hanks says, when she names herself after Madison Avenue.

I remember how back in the 80's, Madison really did seem like a ridiculous first name for a female... (it had only been considered a LAST name generally)...

And today it seems to be one of the most common girls' names. Did SPLASH have something to do with this?

The war is not meant to be won... it is meant to be continuous.

This is so weird!! When I was in preschool (in 1997) I remember some girl's name was Madison in my class and I screwed up everyone's names because I was 4 and weird. For example, I had a friend name Sherry that I called "Cherry" and another friend Caroline, aka "Colorline". Madison, was "Medicine". I don't know if I was hard of hearing or what, but when I saw this movie for the first time (I was around the same age) I distinctly remember thinking of medicine, like cough syrup, when I heard her name. So it made so much sense to me that he said "That's not a name!" I don't know how I remember this crap 14 years later ugh.

Haha, "Colorline, Medicine?" - that's so cute = )

I always liked the name Madison, though. Well, I knew a sweet girl named Maddy - and I'd sometimes call her Madison, even though her name was Madeline. I decided Madison is a great girls name but had no idea it was so heavily influenced by this film.

It wasn't really a first name back then. Today it's just a pretentious, trendy name. I hope it goes away soon.

My goddaughter is named Madison. There are three more in her class. Names have popularity cycles. I can't wait until all those old beauties like Maude, Beulah, Sophie and Viola come back. Oh, wait, they already have! Ew.

My name is Madison and I was born in the nineties. My parents didn't get this name from the movie (my dad worked for a map company so my sister and I are Madison and Montana) but I suppose it is possible that others may have gotten the name from here.

There is an adult film actress named Madison. She was active from 1990 to 1999. She also used the name Madison Stone.

That's post-SPLASH, so it proves my point, I believe.

You are correct. Madison is a last name, not a first name. I think using a last name has become more popular. The first one that comes to mind is Anderson Cooper. I knew a musician named Monroe Quinn. I don't like the sound of two last names. It sounds too preppy for me.

No it doesn't, she was born in 1965. According to this site it is her original name.

You know I don't care that there are a billion little girls named "madison" now, but I am bothered that not once have I EVER heard any of these parents ever admit this name came from Splash.

The joke in the movie was funny because it was true (at the time).

There's nothing wrong the the name per se, but jseez just admit it!!!!

My daughter, born in 1993, is named Madison....

NOT named after Splash--- my ex-wife wanted to name her Maddie after her grandmother, but I felt it sounded too much like a farm wife...

After a lot of negotiations, we named her Madison so she would have a successful sounding name that would look good on a business card....

Madison is a unisex name. When you google that name, men who is named that also shows up, not meny, but they do show up. The oldest one i could locate looked like to be in his 50's.

There's a pitcher for the SF Giants named Madison Bumgarner. He has a very unfortunate nickname, though: Mad Bum. ;)
