shareIn 1984 the average gas station didn't carry bottled water or water containers. Milk would spoil Loading some soft drinks into a truck makes perfect sense if you are bugging out to a place where you are uncertain about natural water supplies.
That terrain looked like it was brimming with natural water supplies
maybe the script writer had them only take "carbonated beverages" so they could have the "piss in the radiator" scene
