This Would Make a Great Remake

A thought just hit me: 'WarGames' would be a good option for a remake. Considering how far technology has progressed since 1983 (e.g., the Internet, laptops, amazing computer graphics), the possibilities seem almost limitless for a remake. The only question now is which actors/actresses would be right to play the title roles? Sorry if this topic has already been discussed.

There was a spiritual remake already. It was called "Sneakers".

A spiritual remake?

The remake would be like "Eagle Eye" i.e. it would suck

I would love to see a remake of this movie

Why in the world would we need a remake?

reply

Cosm, two words to answer your question

we don't.

(so let's just hope it is never a new re-make. Ever.)

Emma Watson would be great in Ally Sheedy's part.

I agree, I think a remake of this movie would work well since the technology has progressed so far since 1983. It makes more sense than constantly rebooting the Spiderman franchise!

Why does every movie need to be re-made? I've never seen a re-make that's even close to being as good as the original. Re-makes are usually done when no one has an original idea.

Then you obviously haven't seen the good remakes. Ocean's eleven is better than the original, The Thing (1982) is better than the original from 1951, The Departed is better than the original infernal affairs and True Grit is better than the original.

Honorable mention

Dawn of the Dead 2004
Twelve Monkeys 1995
King Kong 2005
Scareface 1983 (better than the original)
13 Assassins 2011 (so good)

Maybe you should try watching good movies sometime.

I believe that's exactly what I said.

I agree, this movie could only be remade if it was again set in the early 1980s. That might make a good movie, but one based today would basically be a different movie, not a remake. You can't "accidentally" hack into something that sophisticated today.

On another note, the man who said the remakes of True Grit and King Kong were better than the originals is crazy. John Wayne and Merian C. Cooper forever! 😉

Disagree.

The reason is that the historical context isnt there. When Wargames came out, computers had been mostly restricted to government departments, universities and computer hobbyists. The Internet was in its early infancy, and with that virus did not represent a significant threat. It was only five years later when the Morris Worm was unleashed in 1988 and was able to take down an estimated 10% of the internet and make international news, that the security of computer networks became a serious topic.

While you are right in saying that technology has come a long way since 1983, security has made massive leaps and bounds too, especially with encryption technologies being developed to combat spying from foreign governments. Because of this, the story of a teenager accidentally breaking into a military network doesn't seem believable in the 2010's.
