Who agrees this is Cronenberg's best movie?

I found this one better than his other two masterpieces, Dead Ringers and The Fly. It feels more dark and gritty compared to the more "hollywood" bigger budget feel of the other too. Videodrome scared me a lot more than The Fly and Dead Ringers and I felt it had a much stronger message. Anybody else agree?

P.S. What a great, haunting ending that has been instilled in my brain forever

I agree.

One of the most original films ever made and my favorite from Cronenberg.

I agree, I like Videodrome the best of all Cronenberg's works. I also really like A History of Violence but it wasn't written by him.

reply

Agreed, this and Existenz for me. I wish he`d go back to making these weird dark Body Horror type films.

If you keep an open mind... you`ll discover dark secrets.

I disagree. It,s a very good game but I think donkey kong is better lol. Nah I think the fly is his masterpiece in terms of overall entertainment. Cronenberg's favorite theme of the flesh turning on the man in this case is clearly done to it's max potential, best acting, best score, best structure. Come on can you really top goldblum puking on the donuts followed by his ear falling off. Just wow. The idea of watching a man slowly turn into a hideous creature mentally and physically is horror at the peak of it's potential. At the same time tho videodrome is def in my top five cronenberg's. It's just a bit slower and not as cohesive.

Valid points but to me The Fly just isn't as creepy and gritty as Videodrome. It's way too "clean" and hollywoodized. Videodrome's moments of hallucination have yet to be matched in pure scaryness by any Cronenberg film before or after

Flesh (in more ways than one) is also very prevalent in Crash(1996)

I am pretty sure this is the movie he is most widely known for (at least amongst cult movie fans and whatever; in reality, his most 'successful' film is probably the Fly or History of Violence or Scanners or something, eh?). This is definitely his best film, but DEAD ZONE and DEAD RINGERS are up there too.

I do.

This, The Fly, and Dead Ringers are all excellent movies. While I think Dead Ringers is his most mature film, The Fly and Videodrome are perfect examples of Cronenberg's body horror film-making style. I like The Fly slightly more, but I agree that Videodrome is weirder and grittier.

Wow!! I am surprised no one even mention Crash! Crash is my favorite, followed by Videodrome.

reply

Really? I STRONGLY feel that Crash is Cronenberg's worst movie...

reply

Yeah, Crash is a strange one. I like it more than Method, and it definitely has good moments and a wonderful soundtrack. But sometimes it draaags.

reply

Well, i am surprised nobody mentioned "Eastern Promises"! That's my favorite Cronenberg movie, that and "A History of Violence"

As far as his more creepy movies go, i'd put "Videodrome" before "The Fly" and "Scanners" in third. Kinda liked "Existenz" too.

Never watched "Dead Ringers" nor had i ever heard of it. Will watch it later tonight, let's see. Hope it's as good as people in this thread say it is! Guess i should give "Crash" a try too.

Oh and special mention to "A Dangerous Method" that i managed to really like!

I refuse to pick from his 80's movies, they're all fantastic. THE FLY is a personal favorite of mine and I consider it his best film, but I find it way too hard to choose between VIDEODROME, DEAD RINGERS or THE DEAD ZONE.
