Peanut butter on sushi

I thought while watching the movie previously that this was some weird hybrid thing from Southern California culture at the time. But right now I'm watching the director commentary and Coolidge says "it's supposed to represent uni, but it's actually peanut butter". I had to laugh, because she says it like she really pulled a clever trick there and got one over on the audience, but as much as I love this movie I was like no, you just made me wonder why they're putting peanut butter on sushi.

I know this is old, but that looked to be peanut sauce, which is a delicacy in all cultures of Asian cooking. And, yes, certainly delicious on sushi!

reply

The director says it was peanut butter.

reply

Oh, cool. And it was meant to be shown as only plain peanut butter aka not masquerading for peanut sauce? I ask this because I can't imagine plain peanut butter on its own being served along with sushi ever, even in the 80's.

reply

She said it was actually peanut butter but it was a trick, that it was supposed to be uni as far as the audience was concerned. I didn't even know what uni was before Googling it, so to me I was just like "why is there peanut butter on sushi?" LOL

reply

As you know, uni doesn't look anything like peanut butter, but, hey, it was the early 80's and sushi was fairly new to the general culinary scene in America, so not many would have known the difference anyway. Now I'm craving udon noodles with peanut sauce!! :-D

reply

I actually didn't know what uni looked like, but I certainly clocked that it looked like peanut butter!
