No, you are not the only one! This is my ALL TIME favorite movie!!!
shareI've hunted for this film for a long time, and finally found it. I'd heard about it for years. Eric Roberts was brilliant as he was in Runaway Train with Jon Voight.
In Star 80 there were a series of conflicts that were the downfall of Paul Snider. He was an entrepreneur, but was side-tracked by fantasy in this case -Dorothy. He wanted to be respected but went about it the wrong way. Instead of earning it he was in your face -how he treated Hefner, etc. He wanted to be loved unconditionally, but didn't have a clue about women -either fawning over them or treating them abysmally. He wanted to join the ranks of the famous, but was so uncouth that he alienated just about everyone. What a great psychological study!
This was a haunting film that I will never forget. Hemmingway as Dorothy was heartbreakingly true and believable.
I first saw this incredible film when it premiered in 1983 at the Century Theatre in my home town of Hamilton, Ontario. I was 15yrs old at the time. After viewing the film I spent the next few weeks at the library trying to dig up as much info on Dorothy, Paul and anyone connected to them. The fact that Dorothy was Canadian had little to no effect on my mania for info. I felt connected to the characters because of the wonderful job Bob Fosse did directing and also the stand out performance by Eric Roberts. I have seen literally thousands of films in my 38yrs but this one definitely left its mark on me. Were it that I were stranded on an island and could only take 25 films with me, STAR 80 would most assuredly be among them.
shareIt's nice to hear from another fan of this remarkable film. I believe I would include it in my "stranded on a desert island" list as well.
sharewe're still out here, fans of this movie, no matter how dark and scary it gets. when i saw it in the theatre in '83, i remember being stunned by the sudden ending, even tho i knew what was coming. like everyone else, (sigh. wish i could come up with something original) i believe eric roberts was the true star of the picture. the story is heartbreaking, and at some level, us girls can relate to dorothy. not as a playboy model, but caught between the two men - one she feels obligated to and doesn't want to hurt, the other new and exciting . . been there. putting the DVD in right now - had to watch again after reading all these posts.

Well, coming from Da Man who gave us All That Jazz and Cabaret, yes, I thought this was a disappointment. But then again, like even the very weakest makings of geniouses like Sam Peckinpah, it outperforms anything made these days.
Is this anything like other Fosse films? I absolutely loved Cabaret, Lenny and especially ATJ. Is this worthy watching ??
shareWhat the hell was the OP carrying on about 18 years ago? I can only wonder...
