I just don't get it

I mean, Halloween the movie franchise has had lots of movies starring the EXECRABLE Michael Myers, and only, ONLY the original was considered ANY good at all!

Then along comes this one-off movie which is NOT about Michael Myers, and for some reason, even though people HATE the Michael Myers sequels, they choose to hate this movie more. Why is that?

To me, Halloween 3: Season of the Witch and the first Halloween movie are the ONLY Halloween movie worth considering, even though I consider Michael Myers to be overrated and another BORING movie boogeyman.

reply

This one is my favorite out of the series. Even more than the first..

reply

They chose to hate this one, because they were cheated into thinking it was a sequel to the Myers story line. Probably a lot of pissed off fans in the audience. Halloween III isn't that great of a movie, but a lot of bad will could have been avoided if they just dropped III from the title, and called it just Halloween: Season of the Witch.

reply

Yes, I've heard about dropping the III. But I've read many responses saying that this movie should not have the "brand name" "Halloween" in it at all, just call it "Season of the Witch".

If this movie had been second after the original Halloween, then the original fans probably wouldn't have minded so much. But as it is, they got it into their heads (and why shouldn't they?) that Halloween was going to be solely about Michael Myers from then on, like Friday the 13th was about Jason Voorhees, so when this movie came out, they were like "WTF!?! WHERE'S MICHAEL??" and no wonder the reaction to this was terrible.

reply

I think the movie deserved Halloween-prefix because it was intended be a beginning of series of Halloween-themed movies.

reply

That's correct: every Halloween movie was meant to be with all different characters and settings but with Halloween as the general theme, but no, the makers of Halloween 2 had to continue with Michael Myers, throwing the whole concept into doubt. Maybe they didn't have enough ideas for Halloween, or they wanted to be a multi-movie franchise like Friday the 13th. I should point out that I'm not sure if Friday the 13th came out at the same time, before or later. I should research that.

Season of the Witch: A Halloween Tale

reply

the first sequel, while not as excellent as the original, keeps the same atmosphere and pacing for the most part

reply

I prefer the Halloween 3 atmosphere, to be honest. Slasher movies are boring, Michael Myers is boring.

reply

People who claim this movie is any good must be joking or trolling.

Halloween 3 not having Michael Myers was the least of its problems.

This movie is uber garbage.

You're wrong.

I agree largely (I do kinda like Halloween II)... Halloween III misses greatness by some difficult to assess margin, largely due to the differing attitudes of John Carpenter and the original writer, Nigel Kneale. What with Carpenter and Wallace rewriting, presumably to suit Carpenter, the story apparently got a bit muddled but even as it stands it is pretty effective.

In a better world some sort of genius marketing campaign would have prevented the crazy disappointment of Michael Myers fans and led to a yearly franchise of varied films all with a Halloween theme instead of... you know...

reply

Halloween III is my second favorite in the franchise

I think it would be a more interesting Halloween movie and sequel if it was done differently. Like they could have made a link between those masks and Michael Myers i.e. explaining that wearing the mask makes children insane and that was why Michael became the murderous lunatic he is when he first wore a mask in the beginning of the original movie.

Still, I like the movie and would rate it 7/10.
