How old were you when you first watched this movie?

I was 11 and I thought it was awesome but my mom said that she thought it was confusing(then again it was like 2:00 in the morning when we decided to watch it and she was falling asleep)It's one of my favorite movies. When I tell people this they're like, What movie is that....they never even heard of it...But, whatever. I still love this movie!!

Probably 12. I just got done watching this on HBO for the first time since then. A few things stuck in my head as I started to watch this and tried to recall what I remembered. I knew it wasn't a pure comedy, I knew someone's unit got bit off, I knew Garp got shot. I'm glad I did re-watch this. It had darn solid acting, even by Glen Close who I normally cant bear to look at. It makes me think of the movies and styles that existed in the late 70's , early 80's , these are deep films, unafraid of subject matter and basically unchained from PC. Which is good to a point, yet maybe it kinda makes for meal that tastes good when eating but when your done you have to think...hmm I don't really think I'll make that again. Return of Secaucus Seven, Big Chill, hmm that one with Debra Winger and she has an affair with Jeff Daniels or John Lithgow or whatever it was, all remind me of films of this ilk. Well I do like story driven stuff, I hate PC shackled drivel, and GCI just may be totally ruining moviemaking for good, star vehicles like those Ocean's whatever films are lame as the day is long, so maybe it's time for the old cookbooks to come back out.

I was 15 when I first saw this movie in '83, and now my 10 year old considers this film at the top his greatest film list.

When I was 19, back in '84. Was at my brother's on my first leave (usn), drinking some dark ones.

I was 19 and saw it on HBO in 1983. Amazing characters and very different from other movies at that time...

I was 13, I saw it when it was first released. I liked it so much I read the book and became a lifelong fan of John Irving.
