Rocky's verbal taunts at Clubber at the end of the movie. wow

Stallone sure changed things up for Rocky III where he acted tough by doing some verbal taunts at Clubber by saying stuff that his mother hits harder than Clubber etc.

Was that Stallone's creative control or whatever for Rocky to say stuff like that?

reply

Sure, it was a change in Rocky's "style" but the whole strategy, as many outlined, was to make sure he wore Clubber down. He even says that at the end of one of the rounds - "at least I ain't breathin' heavy!!!" It was a damn good strategy - the taunts only pissed Lang off more and he got even more worn down!

Adding trash talking to his repertoire sure made his character a stand out in Rocky 3 compared to the others.

I don't really see it to be generally in Rocky's character to trash talk opponents like that. He was played more as a likeable lug by Stallone.

In this case though, it was part of a strategy. Clubber was essentially a bully, and was exposed a bit by this. He got tired out quickly, and didn't have a plan-b. Part of him being tired out was that he was too busy swinging away, but also because he was angry at what Rocky was saying to him.

It was all calculated on Rocky's part.

Rocky 3 Stallone is playing Stallone. Or his idealised version of himself.

Long gone is the lovable blubber mouth, and in part 3 we have a cool, sophisticated, introspective, deep thinker who says very little compared.

He's had face surgery, his hair and make up are immaculate.

Watch them back to back and it's a stark contrast.

The beginning of Rocky 3 I had to check myself if it was the same character at all.

Well, Sly did direct this flick…

I didn’t think the taunts were very good, but it was effective. Clubber Lang had some issues controlling his emotions, so, as others have stated, it was a good strategy to get him riled up and throwing haymakers so he’d run out of gas.

Lang was a pure puncher from the streets of Chicago, true to his moniker as the Southside Slugger…

Cheers…

..by saying stuff that his mother hits harder than Clubber etc.

Ouch. Talk about going for the jugular.

reply

It showed he no longer feared this man and truth be told, it was pretty exciting when it came out beating MR.T

reply

Did you not see the first Rocky? Apollo was beating on Rocky and then Rocky taunted Apollo and the announcer followed up: He says he wants more! He wants more!

reply

well, its Rocky III I'm talking about here where Rocky really goes wild with the taunts

reply

Nonetheless, it was a great plot twist having Rocky win at the end. The first time I saw this, I for sure thought Rocky would again lose to Clubber after the vicious beating he took in their first fight

reply

You said: "where he acted tough by doing some verbal taunts". Again, that was done in the very first movie.

reply

not really. its Rocky III where Rockey went bonkers with the taunts because of him getting smarter from reading etc

Rocky changed a lot during Rocky III

reply

You've shifted the goal posts by adding wild and bonkers to taunts. Again, this was not reflected with a change where he "he acted tough by doing some verbal taunts".

fuck off
