Is it me, or is Gary really creepy?

I mean, come on.

He walks into the ice cream place and basically leers at Karen.
Because of this, I now know what term leering means (thanks Gary).

Later, he lets the air out of her tires so he can give her a lift to school, a move a young Ted Bundy would certainly appreciate.

He then goes to a party and starts drinking JD straight right outta the bottle, long before Slash made it fashionable to do so. - I also like the fact that his buddy then leads him to his own car after he is clearly wasted, in order to drive himself home - whatta friend.

Not to mention he's the one doing all the measuring in the 'one with the biggest tool wins the pool' pool.

Even Ruby the whore thought he was a creep.
I can't blame her.

Gary is a romantic, unsure how to deal with his emotional feelings towards Karen. It is Rick who I found to be the real creep...and we know what happens with Karen at the end. As a critic put it, it is Gary who is an emotional virgin.

While you're listing the 'creepy' thing, you left out the biggest, lifting up her shirt while she was sleeping to see her boobs.

But, I'm really not that quick to lable Gary, I thought the movie captured just how perverted all three types (Gary, David and Rick) were at that age back then. No real access to porn as easy as it is now, I mean look at how fast they were to jump on Victor for peeping into the girls locker room, when all of them would have done the same thing in a second had they been alone in the locker.

Gary was just looking for real love for sex, he was obviously not capable of the quickie with anyone on the spot, as he shown. Sure, he was pathetic to look at seeing his failure and playing the role of nice guys finish last.

I just watched the movie. He didn't lift up her shirt. When he picked up the magazine she had been reading he noticed that her t-shirt had bunched up and he pulled down her shirt and pulled the blanket up. He was being a gentleman.

Gary was a f@GGOT wimp to the extreme.

What made Gary creepy were his facial expressions coupled with his long and silent gazes at Karen. While i think an infatuated and smitten teenager may have a couple of seconds of frozen uncertainty, having it stretched out for nearly a minute seems to unlikely, or just creepy.

Gary just looks like a wimp and a loser. He has that droopy face and a very weak chin. Plus, he had to say all those painfully goofy lines like, 'Meatball sandwich' repeatedly.

This thread is hilarious lol. Hard to disagree with any of it though, even the first time I saw it back in the day I remember thinking "jeez Dude, reign it in a little" when he was just gawping at her with mouth agape at every opportunity. I'm not sure whether it was a conscious decision on the Director's part or whether it was poor acting, or bad directing, but yes he's way too intense. He even adjusts the mirror when he's sat in the front of the car with sexy Rose at the beach so he can watch Karen kissing his friend in the back seat. Dude, just no. He wasn't much of a friend either... I know his buddy was a bit of a heel to girls but it's an unspoken rule with bro's, if your friend gets the girl then you back off and forget it. Still, none of them came out of it very well. He's heartbroken, and Karen is wasting her time on a complete player.

I just saw this movie for the first time and found him creepy. He's the type of guy who's so insecure that if/when he gets a girl like Karen he becomes SUPER possessive and controlling of her. Prior to watching this I'd read that it had a very serious/downer ending and legit kept half expecting Gary to snap and kill either himself or Rick. All the way to the credits I was waiting for him to drive that pizza delivery car off a cliff!

An old thread but I thought the exact same thing. He was a sad sack who tried too hard and honestly how can he blame Rick? They all just wanted to get laid so Rick was doing what Rick does.
