I hadn't ever read any complaints about the space-suited agents before. What was the reason for the nit-pick, if you don't mind my asking? I certainly read the backlash online when Spielberg decided to digitally remove the FBI agent's handguns in favor of walkie-talkies in the re-release. Ugh, political correctness sucks ass.
I always attributed the spacesuits being worn to the fact that the agents knew that they were dealing with an extraterrestrial life form, one that they knew could manipulate gravity to some extent. That, and it was scary as hell for Mary and the kids, seeing a dude in a NASA EVA suit with the mirrored visor down and his arms reaching out.
