I know it's strange to call E.T underrated.. But I really sorta think it is. It should rank up there with the all-time greats. It's a perfect film.

ET is a timeless masterpiece and definitely one of the greatest movies of all time.
Who says they don't? It may not be in IMDB 250 (which already includes many films that should not be there). But it is in the AFI top 100, Sight and Sound 1000 and has been in the National Film Registry since 1994

I certainly read the backlash online when Spielberg decided to digitally remove the FBI agent's handguns in favor of walkie-talkies in the re-release. Ugh, political correctness sucks ass.
I always attributed the spacesuits being worn to the fact that the agents knew that they were dealing with an extraterrestrial life form, one that they knew could manipulate gravity to some extent. That, and it was scary as hell for Mary and the kids, seeing a dude in a NASA EVA suit with the mirrored visor down and his arms reaching out.

I think most reasonably knowledgeable people with good taste would agree this is one of the best movies of all time. I agree with you, it's a perfect film and one of Spielberg's very best, which is saying a lot.

Maybe perfect for those who grew up with it. Watched it as a kid during early 90s and thought it was unengaging and oversentimental. Rewatched it many years since and found it cheesy and poorly written. I do like the "friendly alien" theme, and the practical effects are alright, but it's still just a simple fairy tale.
shareI saw it in the theaters when it came out. I loved it. It was SO novel for its time.
Re-watching it as an adult, I will say that I found about 3/4 of it as sooooo slow!
And I am someone who does not mind a slow-burn film, as long as it tells a story.
But this film seemed deliberately slow, some scenes were way too dragged out.
That all said, the final scene is one of THE BEST.
Where else can you say that a movie packed that much emotion into 2 words:
"...Come."
"...Stay."
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
