7.9 is absurd.

The first and last ten minutes (not counting the credits) are strong and have a rewatch value, but the rest is meh. I wasn't impressed with this one even back in 1982 when I was 12 years old. Seemed to me a mediocre kiddie movie even back then and it never flew. Altough Close Encounters of the Third Kind was initially boring experience for me, I've learned to appreciate its strong points more when I got older. ET on the other hand has been just flat line for me all the time.
