Is it the puppet E.T. that dates this movie?

As well directed as the film is do you think the puppet E.T is the thing that dates this movie? An oddity at the time, now he seems creepy and not as lovable as back in the day. Also E.T comes across more mechanical now than he did. The ending also tends to be a little much with all those shots of people crying to the puppet leaving. I dunno. Does this movie hold up as well as it did?

Not at all. Being that this is a fantasy children's story more than a Science-Fiction drama it also lends to the childhood tropes found in many stories, songs, and movies involving children and imaginary creatures and monsters who become friends.

Look at this way, if they did a Sesame Street movie involving CGI I am pretty sure fans of all ages who grew up with the characters would find no affinity for computer generated Big Bird, Grover, or Bert and Ernie. Even the cartoon versions of these characters hold more cachet with audiences then CGI ones.
