Is it the puppet E.T. that dates this movie?

As well directed as the film is do you think the puppet E.T is the thing that dates this movie? An oddity at the time, now he seems creepy and not as lovable as back in the day. Also E.T comes across more mechanical now than he did. The ending also tends to be a little much with all those shots of people crying to the puppet leaving. I dunno. Does this movie hold up as well as it did?

The only thing that's dated is the effects when they fly on the bikes, but even that is fine.

Right, chroma key composite imagery has come a long way since then, and back then filmmakers weren't quite as diligent about making sure that the lighting of the elements matched.

No, no really. The Yoda puppet in Star Wars doesn't date that series.

It's perfectly dated, it's a timeless masterpiece. Younger generations may not get it and by the sounds of it I would guess you are around 20.

Would cartonish cgi e.t. made it not dated?

reply

The puppet has zero effect on the datedness. I saw some scenes with the CGI, it's clownish. He IS creepy, he's a frick'n weird little alien. Many scenes are deliberately creepy, I mean wtf... I guess it's not modern until you completely ruin it.

I still prefer the puppet Version. For me the puppet has more "Emotion" than the CGI one.

Puppet? What puppet?
