Totally over rated movie

I did not watch the movie when it was released in the theater or on media. Today I finally watched it. It is horribly done in direction, writing, and acting. If you watch it again I will bet you won't think it is quite as good as you remember it. There is a reason for this because it is so weakly delivered. It is your memory of the film that gives it such a high score. This is not a classic film because it does not stand the test of time. It is now a B-film at best.

Just watched the original version last night on the big screen at the Orlando Universal Studios theater.

It's JUST as good as it was when I originally saw it, if not better since I was no longer 3 and could understand the movie.

Everything you claim about the movie makes me wonder if you know anything about film making at all. Seriously. You claim that it was badly written and directed, I found both to be solid. The acting of some of the kids I will admit could be better, mainly Elliot, but it works for this movie.

Maybe if you gave examples of why you think this movie stinks people would respect your opinion more.

Shoe is correct. I didn't have much problem with the acting and I thought the characters were written fairly well, but the direction is your typical relentlessly over the top Spielberg crap and the story line, which could have been very good, is undone by too many WTF moments.

I first saw this movie in the theater back in 1982 and recalled it fondly. My wife and I watched it again with our kids yesterday and we were both very suprised at how awful it was, nothing at all like what we remembered when seeing it as teens.

A B-FILM? What the hell are you on? You're entitled to your opinion but...no. So you're the one who brought the rating down.

Hmph!

I saw this for the first time when I was about 5. I watched it again about a year ago (I'm 19) and I couldn't believe how much I loved it. I cried...well, I teared up. I assumed that I'd find it stupid now but no. It is a classic movie. It does stand the test of time. I also loved Lara Croft: Tomb Raider as a kid, and while I still enjoy it for nostalgic purposes...I am aware that it's a really crappy film.

E.T. is not, and nostalgia has nothing to do with my opinion.

You're evidently a pathetic troll who likes crap films. E.T. is a classic and no one can argue that. Get off of this board and get a life!

well I've just watched the movie and I have to say it didn't blow me away. But hey it's simple. The movie is from 1982 and here I am watching it 30 years later. The effects must have been quite good for that times (tho Star Wars beats it 10 times) . Also the plot is cliche but after all it's a kids movie. I think this movie is a good lesson for the kids to show them what's important in life (like love, compassion, etc).
One thing I didn't like about this movie though is that it was american way over the top, it fits the usual schematic. Apart from it acting was good but not the best I've seen. The music was awesome (I could expect nothing else from john Williams). 6/10.

I agree that it's overrated, but I wouldn't call it horrible in all those areas. It's just sort of a low brow kid's flick - something akin to Flight Of The Navigator - IMHO.

It's where Spielberg went all Disney on us. I mean, he did Jaws and Close Encounters, and then did E.T., uggh.

Totally Agreed . I love Spielberg . But this movie ... 5/10

I see it is only 94/100 on metacritic with 26 critics...sounds like a very overrated film to me??? Many will think it is overrated but these people are in the minority. I hardly think the imdb boards which are flooded with negativity, hate, cynicism, nitpicking from so called 'cinephiles' and trolling, are an accurate reflection of how the general global population feels about any film let alone ET. For me ET is a magnificent, amazing and incredible film. It is my 2nd favourite film of all time beaten only by another Spielberg classic. ET should have won the Best Picture Oscar that year. Oscar winning director of that year Richard Attenborough himself has admitted that he thought ET was the better film. Neither Spielberg nor his film ET need to prove anything. ET is considered as a classic - this is not an opinion but a fact. Hate it, trash it, do whatever but you can't change facts which speak for themselves.

You really need to calm down and allow for more actual independence of thought. I gave it a 2. While you may be able to state 'facts' about majority this and minority that, it doesn't change the fact that people are different and someone is allowed to have very lukewarm feelings towards this film without them being a troll or worse.
