Connery's Greatest Performance?

Whatever the flaws of Outland and The Presidio, Connery's work as an actor with Hyams was exemplary in both films. The character he plays in this movie is both tough and vulnerable, and Connery plays the part to the hilt, yet in a totally authentic and understated way. I like that he is essentially playing a working class average Joe (much like his own background) as opposed to an exotic or larger than life character - or a father figure/mentor - as he did in many of his later films. His "I wanted to see if they're right" monologue on the squash court is simply fantastic, as is his choking back of tears while talking to his son on the vid screen. He's very subtle, and neither over nor under plays it. Fantastic performance.

Oh, Peter Boyle was wonderfully slimy in this one as the villian. Sternhagen and the actress who played the wife were also very good, as was James B. Sikking as Connery's corrupt deputy. Really, only the child actor left something to be desired

It was an excellent movie. A pretty good book as well. I preferred him as James Bond though.

I'd probably go with The Offence (1973). https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070468/

Has Connery ever been bad, apart from the later Bond films he didn't want to be in.

You book Connery to play Connery and he turns up to do just that.

Half the time I don't even think he knows he's in a movie and the camera follows him around doing his daily business of knocking dudes out and being the most "alpha" guy in the room.

Maybe this one stood out for me because we got Connery at his realest without any of the flashiness or fake Irish accent of The Untouchables. Just a put-upon working class guy who happens to work on a moon of Jupiter.

Fake Irish accent? He didn't even attempt one apart from when he says "Jay-sus"😂

reply

OK, barely there, and badly faked when present.

Haha.

Connery was on typically good form in this but to see what he was really capable of as an actor I think his best performances were probably The Hill and The Offence.
