Is it just me or is every single character so ANNOYING?

I've seen this film several times over the years and while I think it manages to hold up as a decent early 80s slasher, there is one thing that always annoys me to no end: the endless amount of irritating characters.

First we have the two alpha males competing for the affections of Sarah, strutting around in their boots and acting like stupid dicks. They exist mainly to drink beer, google over Sarah, and fight with one another.

And the females aren't much better. Their only purpose in the movie is being readily available to hang all over their stupid men like possessions. Sarah sits idly by while Axel plays a knife game in the bar and her annoying ass friend is always standing right over her big boyfriend with the mustache like he's got a leash on her. These little waifs just seem to float in and out of the scenery tied to their men the whole time.

Then there's Sarah herself--a real piece of work. She strings two men along and then appears dismayed whenever they react like any two men would do being played by the same woman and fight each other. She never gives any one man some reassurance she's going to stay with him, in fact it seems the entire movie she is just waiting around to see which one she really wants to be with and acting upset when they argue over her. What a dumbass. Maybe if she gave one a committed response and ignored the other one, she wouldn't be in the predicament she's in. And half the time she was instigating the whole thing, anyway. "I just wanna put on some music, okay?" then she goes over to talk to TJ right behind her boyfriend's back. Meets with TJ behind her boyfriend's back. I think she was just enjoying having two men fight over her. No girl can be this dumb. What a drama queen.

The rest of the males consist of the stupid practical joker and the gool 'ol rednecks who just think about getting laid while hooting and hollering every other minute over something stupid. "It's gonna be a hot time on Saturday night!" Yee haw.

And what was up with the goofy way some of them said their lines? When Axel says "If they wanna be (something about coal), they gotta know the mine!" I just wanted to hit him. Talk normal. And Sarah's friend is the worst offender, delivering every line with that irritating pitch and the awful expression. "Wait'll you see the dress I got--cut down to here, slit up to there--I may not get out aliveeeee!" Ughhhhhh it's like she suddenly develops a speech impediment with certain words. And "Honey, if I'm going down there, you're goin' with me." Again, always in that annoying voice with that stupid expression. Why?

The men are also sexist. "You know the rule: no women in the mine." Yeah, because the women belong at the town hall decorating for the Valentine's Dance and waiting at your beck and call to stand over you while you get drunk at the bar. And TJ's "It ain't my turn to watch after her" was equally chauvinistic, like Sarah is some possession they're both fighting over.

Sorry for ranting, but this whole group of people just annoy me to no end. They're even more annoying than the characters in some of the Friday the 13th sequels and that says something.

it's just you. This is one of the 80's slasher flicks where i actually like the characters.

Yeah, it's just you. Some characters were kind of annoying but most of them were fine with me. As for the "No women in the mine" line, that's for safety reasons not chauvinistic ones.

What a stinker!
I can´t believe I sat through this. Were there any professional actors in this or just some locals they got from the street to play the role?
Terrible. Definately Canadian! LOL

If it harms none, do what thou wilt.

Agree with you, Dormdrippingblood.
Was hard for me to find any likable characters in this movie.
Was a decent movie nonetheless :)

Just you and a few I'm afraid.

I thought that they were all likable and well acted! Though Patty was annoying in a funny way.

You are really dead on - I actually just saw the uncut version a few days ago (the new gore is cool but would probably be R rated now and released) - but the one thing that does stand out is how annoying most of the characters are. Especially TJ & Axel.

Why would TJ leave and not even say goodbye to the love of his life? And then he comes back and expects things to be like the old days?

Axel should have more of a problem with Sarah than TJ - she does lead him on and try to play both sides....at one point it seemed like she was gonna try and get it on with Harold when they headed down to the mine - watch it again and see how she uses her eyes and flirts with Harold....it's odd....

There is a strange attitude towards women - it's almost as if they are mere possessions and pawns to be claimed....very odd indeed....

Sarah's friend is just funny - she is annoying but only in that 'friend in a film' kind of way - I found most of the adults to be okay - but I never understood the police chief's hatred of that one guy (who gets his face burned in the hot dog water).

As for 'no women in the mine' - that is more of a safety issue than a sexist one.

As an aside - the funniest line that I actually used to say when I scooped ice cream back in high school/college was: 'it's gonna be a hot time on Saturday night!!' - so every time I hear that in the movie - I laugh

The most annoying line is when Harold tells the guy 'maybe you got a secret admirer'

But this movie is priceless, its a top tier slasher and much better than the remake

i liked hollis beleive it or not. He seemed to be the only one with some sense and seemed to care about people despite his looks.. Now tj and axel were really not likeable in anyway. Tj just seemed like a real jerk.

reply

No, it's not you, they are all annoying. But this is typical of both slashers and of the era.

I thought Hollis was kind of likable, at least up until he stupidly agrees to take people into the mine.

I think every slasher in existence has annoying characters. Its part of the formula. I thought the acting was pretty solid on this one though.

I was reminded of St. Elmo's Fire when two male characters were fighting over Ally Sheedy for chrissakes. Sarah didn't exactly seem like the type that a guy couldn't get over and I'm sure TJ could have found someone outside of town.

When I first saw the movie in the theaters, it was clear they they were all pretty much a punch list for the Miner. Now, many years later, I see them as people just past the teen years who could have left the town or ended up working there. You have the joker, the leader (Hollis), his loyal girlfriend (I always forget her name), the townie issuing a warning, the local cop, etc. To be fair to movie, I did like the characters, as most small towns have them - and it didn't take place in a remote campsite, cabin or hotel.
