I think not.

Maybe it's ME who is the weird one, but Nightmare City, Oasis Of The Zombies, and Zombie 4/5 are what I deem "total crap". So bad they're... bad. Unwatchable.

True, VIRUS has bad stock footage. It ripped off Dawn of the Dead (the story AND the music). It has bad voice-overs. But it's fun! It's entertaining. Awesome gore (The Eyeball Scene... yes). Awesome corpses.

It's no "Zombi II" or "Carnival Of Souls" but it's a pretty *beeping* good way to spend a boring night after working late. Yes, I like it, have seen it about 4 or 5 times, and will so again. And probably again.

Those are great example of movies that are great on paper but bad in execution-and not in the "bad but kinda fun" way of something like "Zombie Holocaust" or "Hell of the Living Dead."

"Mulva: Zombie Ass Kicker" may very well be the worst zombie movie I've ever seen.

I think one needs to separate these older films from the more contemporary ones because, let's face it, even the worst of the older zombie films look like masterpieces compared to about 95 percent of the digitally-shot no budget garbage of today. However, just looking back at the older crop that were actually real movies shot on film, this isn't one of the better ones. It's not quite as bad as Zombie Lake, Curse of the Screaming Dead, Oasis of the Zombies, the Zombi "sequels" and the Todd Sheets camcorder crap, but it's also not too high up on the list either. Still, I'd take this any day over most recent zombie films.

Considering the existence of Zombi 5, the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake, the Uwe Boll House of the Dead movie, 28 Weeks Later (28 Days Later is good though) and the World War Z movie with Brad Pitt, Hell of the Living Dead is nowhere near the worst zombie movie ever made.

Worst zombie movie ever IMO would be a tie between World War Z and the 2008 Day of the Dead remake.

At least Hell of the Living Dead is entertaining in that campy late 70's B movie sort of way.

Definitely not. The absolute worst zombie movies come from the glut that have been produced in the wake of the Dawn of The Dead remake in 2004 that carries on to this day. I'll take bad practical effects over bad CGI effects any day. I've avoided the majority of these terrible movies but a few examples:

Children of The Living Dead
Day of The Dead 2: Contagium
Return of The Living Dead 4 & 5
The Zombie Diaries
Zombie Strippers
ALL of the Resident Evil movies

Say what you like about these zer-budget '80's Italian zombie movies, but at least they have some level of effort put in with practical effects and they have some level of charm.

I absolutely agree with all of this. The glut of cheap CGI-filled zombie movies of the last decade or so are far worse than anything that came out of Italy in the '70's and '80's.

Not only that, but many scenes in this are legitimately frightening. The scene where the zombie priest is attacking the girl and outside in the Jeep the child turns and bites his father is quite nightmarish.

I'd agree with you to a point, though I don't think many people my age (millennials) would agree that these kind of films have any scare factor. I guess it's all subjective though.

I'd add that the penultimate scene at the chemical plant when five out of six of our main characters are killed within the space of a couple of minutes is also nightmarishly bleak.

Yes! The ending scene IS quite bleak.

Any time I watch a film I am acutely aware of the time period it’s from and I feel like I transport myself to that time. So part of the charm of HOTLD is that’s it’s so early 80’s and Italian and of course, it shows. In my mind this type of film is dream like, or nightmarish in an odd way. I’m not sure if I’m making sense. Lol
