Ruined Scott Glenn for me

I've seen many on this board call Scott Glenn "hot" in this movie. His character in this film was so dispicable(sp?) it made him physically unattractive to me. Does horrible behavior change a person's outward appearance to anyone else?

I was actually so repulsed by his character in this movie, there is still an "Oh, whoa, don't trust that guy" feeling when I see him in any other movie. Guess he did a little bit too good of a job as an actor, huh?

Of course, this whole thing may have to do with the fact that I, myself, was born and raised in Texas, and have seen my share of real people who were monsters like his character.

I have been watching this movie since I was like five or younger and it took me years and years to get past this guy's creepiness in this movie. You're not alone! Kind of like Kathy Bates in Misery--I couldn't watch her in anything else and not be bothered until I was well in my 20's.

"And what would a note say, Dan? 'Cat dead, details later'?"

Just watch Silverado 5 times. That should make up for it.

That's why it's called acting and they are playing characters.

Kathy Bates got an oscar for Misery. She was that good.

Scott Glenn did a complete character about face not only in "Silverado" but also "Hunt for Red October" and "Silence of the Lambs". How Tom Hanks of him. Didn't see a bit of Wes Hightower in either of those movies.

Age helps.

Luckily, I've never met anybody like "Annie" in Misery, but TX is full of guys who are REALLY like Wes, so I think thats why I have this "issue".

I'm a Texan and yes, there are guys like Wes, but there are also MEN like George Strait, so take that generalization on down the road!!

that's good acting, for you, but apart from that, he's not my type. I don't like that bony type. I don't think he's that good looking at all.

Scott Glen was so great as a sleazeball, I had to see him in a few movies where he played more positive characters to like him again. After all these years I think he has brought a lot to the parts he has played.

midwife I am right there with ya! I was the same way with Bill Paxton, I first paid attention to him in Alien 2. He was so frikkin' whiny, with his "Aaw, man! We're all gonna DIE, MAN!!" that I couldn't hardly stand to see him in anything else until I saw him in Frailty. It took me many, many years to get over that, and to realize that an actress/actor's ability to become their role so thoroughly as to put someone off of them for a time because they can't separate the two is actually a backhanded compliment!

As for Scott Glen for some reason I thought for a long time he was related in some way to a Carradine, and I don't know why. I couldn't ever be attracted to someone who acted like that, but it could be because I too have had experience with men like Wes.

Well, you are so right about that; however, i think I (among others) admire Scott Glenn because his acting was just so phenomenal. His portrayal of a nasty thug was so realistic--it was not over-done or "Hollywood-ed" up. That's why, in my opinion, he, the actor, is sexy...it's just so taboo for one to be drawn to Wes, you know. Anyway, I do find him sexy now that I'm older. Of course, when I saw this movie when I was 12, I thought he was repulsive. I just have respect for S Glenn for playing this part perfectly. Hollywood just doesn't have complex, home-grown, raw characters like this anymore.

Of course woman beaters don't only live in TX, but there is a certain "breed" of a-hole men (...and, to be fair and honest, a certain "breed" of equally unpleasant women) that come from here. No, not all men from TX are like Wes. My husband is a wonderful, intelligent, genuinely caring man, and he was born and raised here. I've met many wonderful Texans, in fact.

And , no, I don't think badly of the actor who played Wes. I just shiver every time I see him.

Well yes he was an @$$hole, but if i'm talking about his appearence alone then I have to say that yes I found him to be attractive and sexy.

Really? Once a character in a film is shown to be very cruel, they also become physically repulsive to me. The one exception (though I can't figure out why... the guy is pretty darn evil after all) would be Lucious Malfoy of the Harry Potter films.

I'm with you. I was pretty small when I first saw this movie. Maybe 6 or 7. We watched it alot, it was a family favorite. Anyways, any movie I ever saw with Scott Glenn after this, he creeped me out. As I got much older, I was able to appreciate him as an actor more, but for at least 10 years, he was always that bad guy from Urban Cowboy.

I agree with a lot of the earlier posters and this was creepy role that Scott Glenn played amazingly. That's when you know someone is a great actor when they portray a role so effectively that it changes your whole perception of the person going forward. Shows what a powerful medium movies can be. As far as being HOT, I am a guy so that does not register with me. However, it is pretty obvious that Scott got into great shape for the movie, and was cut big time like Stallone was in Rambo II. I read John said he used to jump down and do 50 clapping push ups before scenes.

I also agree with Katy Bates and Misery, never saw her the same either.

However Glen Close in Fatal Attraction was the most creepy for me, I have never been able to watch her since and not always see her as a psyco!

yeah scott glenn did a great job with this role. fortunately for me, the first time i saw him was in silence of the lambs, so his character didn't really get burned into my brain like it did for some other people here

hmmm, Scott Glenn has always been very sexy to me. So what that his character was a bad boy in this film. He has a ruggedness (sp?) that totally "does it" for me. :-D

You're just jealous because the voices only speak to me
