I have no idea how it's got such a low scoring . . . This is one of my all-time favorite, feel-good-while-watching, great endingof a movie. John Travolta was so friggin' hot in this - (and I'm not usually attracted to the "cowboy" look, but he is yummy!) and I just love his character. This is probably my fave Debra Winger movie (well, other than Terms of Endearment). Her character is so likeable in this movie & I love her southern accent. She was just adorable in this movie. I also liked Pam's character - she was definitely beautiful, but I'm glad Bud and Sissy get back together in the end. Who could not root for them all along?! Although I'm not a fan of country music, I do LOVE this soundtrack. Great music, great movie, great ending. One of my favorite love stories!

Yeah I'd have to agree with everything that was said here. AT LEAST a 7.0. I fell hard for Debra Winger in this movie lol.

reply

lol mdl - I loved her character in the movie. Personally, though, it was John Travolta I was drooling over lol. (I'm not a big fan of a cowboy hat, but he looked HOT in his hat.)

You're right on the money. I LOVE this movie but because of the country music my grown son won't watch it for any amount of money.

In addition, I think you can honestly categorize Urban Cowboy as a niche market film. Films of this type rarely get high ratings from people outside the niche, so it doesn't surprise me that some Travolta fans rated the movie lower due to its subject matter and their unfulfilled expectations. They just don't get country and don't want to. Too bad, their loss.

Just to be conversational--I wouldn't call this redneck culture. I grew up in Appalachia and rednecks are not what was portrayed in this movie.

I'd call this "modern cowboy" culture. Trucks instead of horses; oil jobs instead of range jobs.

Rednecks go to pig roasts instead of country bars. ;-)

When I saw that I wanted to post a complaint as well, I am glad you did.

To be fair it should be 7.9

reply

It is a good movie. I'm not into the country music scene but I like it.

reply

It's a 5.9 because the two main characters in the film acted like they won the lottery when they got a trailer for a wedding gift.

Let's face it, this film ain't a 7, so it has to be less. I myself gave it a 6. I'd give it a 6.5 if we could give half-points. But it ain't no 7. That's too close to an 8, and if you watch some lifedrama's like this that do have an 8, you'll see this is just about where it belongs, but a tad low still.

Just my opinion, as is everyone elses.

The low rating is due mainly to the fact that it's an older film and IMDB is made up mostly by the very young that have no interest in most anything that was made before they were born. If they discover anything like this it is strictly by accident.
I hated country music.. but I still feel it's a great film for what it is. It helps you actually feel the romanticism of Texas and has it's own distinct flavor. It's very good at what it does.

It's doubtful that the reaction of the main characters in one scene affects the rating of the movie in its entirety. Also, the trailer/ home was not a gift but being paid for by Bud, as he explained. Either way, as a gift or purchase it is a brand new home for the newlyweds and certainly worth celebrating.

This is one of John Travolta's best roles and movies.

The rating should be higher. Robert Evan's touch is apparent in this film. A lot of care went into creating authenticity like hiring real patrons of Gilly's to appear in the film. There was an outcry in Texas that a "damn Yankee" like John Travolta was playing Bud Davis but not too loud an outcry. I thought that the leads were outstanding. The film really propelled Debra Winger's career. I think she received a Golden Globe for the part of Sissy.

It has a 5.9 because of Trolls!
Trolls like to give low ratings to Travolta's films.

In all fairness it should be an 8.0 overall.
It is a great movie and still holds up really well.

I think its a 9 but I gave it a 10 to try and get the rating up.

SNF has a good rating.
