What motivates Pam

I think Pam was attracted to Bud's rugged masculinity. She likes her men strong and simple. Don't forget, Bud is the one who approached her in the bar. And I think that Pam was attracted to Bud because he wasn't really into her. She knew he was only using her to make Sissy jealous. And I think that Pam took that as a challenge.

She was a sleezy, easy ho', then suddenly she ain't yo' ho' no' mo'.

I never saw her as independent I always assumed daddy was paying the bill.

Raddik and AngelCake--you're both right. Though there have always been independent women, Pam ain't one of them. Her money is Daddy's money. And you can bet Daddy would have turned off the tap right quick if he got wind she was spending his hard-earned/swindled/outright-stole money on a loser like Bud. If this was for real, Pam would have tired of her slumming experience pretty fast (she would never have pretended to play Betty Crocker for him--she wouldn't have known how) and if she was really looking to rile Daddy she would have skipped whiny Momma's boy Bud for genuine bad boy Wes. Regardless, a rich girl accustomed to getting what she wanted would be WAY too confident and assertive for Bud. Marshalene would be more his speed--compliant and none too bright. In any case, Pam and Wes are plot devices, not believable characters. Pam is there to provide dramatic tension is what's a pretty static narrative, and Wes is there to make Bud look like less of a douche and the role an ultimately sympathetic vehicle for John Travolta. Thatt's why the sudden about-face into cheatin' and wife-beatin'. If Wes had been a down-on-his-luck desperado (and likely Vietnam vet) who turns to crime out of desperation, and Pam had been a vulnerable yet arrogant Lucy Ewing/Jacy Farrow type, it would have been a much better movie but not the showcase for Travolta it was. You can only imagine what might have been with Jeff Bridges (original choice for Bud) and a better director, maybe Robert Altman, at the helm.
