I remember watching this movie for the first time on either network TV or PBS and I distinctly remember them mentioning that it was the extended version. In the extended version Richard does go back again. Did anyone else see this one or remember it? I remember seeing it again and wondering what happened to the whole middle part. If memory serves me correctly, Richard goes back and its been a few years since he was last there. He is still wearing the same suit and Elise wonders what happened to him. Eventually he convinces her that he did not abandon her. I know I am not crazy, but I haven't been able to find any mention of the extended version.
Boy I'd love to see this but the only version of SiT I have seen ends with Richard's death and then they showed his reunion with Elise in the afterlife. Richard was never able to return to her time again as far as I could tell.
Hmmm...this is interesting. If there is an extended version, I will find it or something about it. It's my obsessive disorder, I guess. lol I'll let you know if I ever find something. (I hope to find this exists!)
If you have the current version on dvd with all the extras I know the director mentions that they were going to do a pre-quel about Richards' time with Elise leading up when he sees the penny, and they were thinking of adding more to the ending, but this was about the time Christopher Reeves had his accident. This is my favourite romantic movie mainly because of the music, and I would love to attend one of these SIT get-togethers in Michigan. This movie brought me out of a depressing time in my life, because it was nice to know there was beautiful things in the world to experience. Maybe Jane Seymore could still do this prequel now, she still looks great(of course someone else would have to play Richard.)
I am writing again to tell you that neither I nor the other two repliers are crazy. What I really want is to find a copy of the extended version. Who do we write to get a copy? When is it on network TV again?
You need to write to that Shepherd guy from INSITE....or he is an author who is mentioned on INSITE?......someone that has had their head buried in the movie for many years.
Is it possible you watched a small skit put on by your local broadcaster theorizing their reunion?
I would love to find out that there is more to SIT than I've seen. Be sure to let us know if you're successful in finding it.
An extended version as described here doesn't make sense. If Richard went back, he would have to have disappeared again or else how does one explain Elise looking for him as an elderly lady. There goes the happy ending!
I agree. As much as I'd love to see an extended version (or any sort of deleted scences, for that matter), I can't see how it'd tie in with the rest of the film.
Alternate ending? Hmmm... Richard staying in the past could have been a happy ending, but nowhere near as romantic, and the reunion after his death is some sort of happy ending, anyway. Most importantly, this alternate ending would again, as somebody else pointed out already, doesn't tie in with the beginning of the film.
I wish there were an extended version! I have never heard of an extended version before! Does he go back in time twice in the book? I haven't read it yet. I don't see how it would fit with the movie either, is there a DVD with deleted scenes?
^^^that was always my idea everyone says its impossible for Richard to go back because Elise would never meet him but that would be what doesnt make sense because he could have came back died before her and she just goes looking for him to make sure it happens again
I certainly think it's possible that me and the other people are remembering incorrectly, but I have to admit that I too remember more scenes in the TV version of the movie. I seem to recall him going back in time TWICE. I guess it's possible that I'm thinking of the point where they get seperated.
But there's something else: I am almost positive there was a scene with her speaking on a telephone. The reason I remember this is because I recall wondering whether it was anachronistic to 1912 (it wouldn't have been) So maybe there were one or two scenes cut out of the DVD? Or maybe more? Hopefully someone has the answer.
Also, do they ever explain why William Robinson knew "someone" would show up and change her life? Is he a time traveler as well? I know nothing about the novel.
I don't want to jump on the bandwagon here, mostly because I've read the book, and I know he doesn't go back again, but when movies air on television, sometimes they do appear with scenes that were actually not featured in even the theatrical versions- I guess I'm thinking more along the lines of the scene someone mentioned of Elise on the telephone.
I'd love for there to be an alternate version where he goes back again, but I also really like the way the story ends, and as a couple here have pointed out, an alternate "happy" ending would contradict the beginning of the film.
On a another note, I'm confused about something. It says on this site that the original theme from the movie is not played over the closing credits on the DVD and VHS releases; is this true? So, are they saying that the last track on the soundtrack, the one performed by Roger Williams, was actually what originally played when Richard and Elise meet in the afterlife and the credits roll?
To answer your question, I must return in time to what I recall as 1983. As a several year retailer of movies, when SIT was first released on video tape, it was Roger Williams on the piano. The 2nd release, changed both the picture on the box and some musical arrangements. This fact was stated mid-way down on the reverse side of the container.
The thread originator is not imagining things. I too remember a version that had Richard going back twice to meet Elise. I saw it during a rerun on some network during the mid-to-late 1980's. Subsequent viewings have had Richard going back only once. If anyone has info about the extended version, please let us know.
