Nearly turned it off after first fight scene...

Then DID turn it off after the second. The boxing in this movie is so retardedly unrealistic I couldn't take the movie seriously. The fighters look like bobble head dolls standing their with their hands down taking turns letting their opponent punch them as many times as they can in the face.

How is this movie rated so highly? I'm by no means a purist when it comes to portraying sports on screen, but this was laughably stupid.

Of course the boxing scenes are deliberately stylized.

Regarding the boxing on show that does get through the stylization I can't really make an opinion if proper strategy, body position, etc is being used or not, I don't know enough about the sport.

However I will point out in support of the OP that the film does get off to a shaky start boxing wise. The first fight, and the first punches in the first fight, are very poorly thrown and very obviously fake. It's very apparent that Jake is punching the air and the actor is throwing his head back and no real contact is being made. This gets better as the film progresses. I speculate this is a result of the boxing scenes being shot in order.

You coulda been a contenda kid.

Now you'll never have any idea what the hell that means.

I do believe that boxing fights in 1941 were different than what we see today. I suggest you try to search videos on youtube about classic 40's fight and you'll see.

reply

it is the point
Scorsese didn't want you or any one to see these movie as BOXING (action) film
these is why it not in color
these is why the fight ""unrealistic""
these is why there no big fight in the story
these is why there no Villain or opponent to think of in the core of the story

reply

You expect people to take you seriously on here when you didn't even watch half the movie? Please.

reply

AMEN to that! I was happy when the movie ended! Jake La Motta was unlikeable!

Joey and Vicki were good characters, I liked them a lot! But Jake, no!

I love Robert De Niro, but too bad he got the Oscar for this performance instead of Taxi Driver!

The fighting scenes were ridiculous, especially in the first fight. It did not seem they were really hitting each other, it was not believable!

A guy who doesn't know the difference between a sport movie and a drama is not even worth responding.

Yet you still responded...

OP has a slightly valid point, but should've watched the rest of it.
(This is my favourite film EVER!)
