Taika Waititi doing Flash Gordon remake

Taiki Waititi's animated Flash Gordon movie will now be a live-action feature.

According to its producer John Davis, Waititi is scripting the movie at the moment, which will be entirely live-action.

"Taika is writing it. It was a movie that was a huge influence on him growing up," Davis told Collider. "It is one of his favorite movies. He initially said to me, 'Let's do it animated.' I said, 'Okay.' Then we got into it and started developing it and he said, 'No, let's do it live-action.' I said, 'Even better.'"

sounds like it will be in the same vein as 1980 movie (which was sort of copied in Thor Ragnarok and no doubt Love & Thunder). i bet Sam Jones will get a cameo

Seems pointless. As you said Thor Ragnarok was already effectively his remake. Why bother with another?

Nostalgia

Idiots will hand over money for any old shit.

I'm so looking forward to this!

And he absolutely MUST hire some meathead who'll never work again as Flash, as a tribute to the original film.

It's listed as In Development. Hopefully, that's where it stays.

Unfortunately, remakes of great sci-fi films generally are crap. But it's always interesting to see something new in the world of a much-loved classic. It will no doubt reach a new audience, some of whom may be curious enough to go and see the older one (and some even then might find they prefer the older one!). And those of us who don't like the remake will have more to talk about and will hold the older one even higher. Like what happened with RoboCop and Total Recall.

It will give a lot of people a lot of work for many months, and the most interesting thing is... who will do the music? If it's not synth and rock stuff then it'll be an entirely different thing!

I personally would love to see it open with a new, epic rendition of the Flash theme complete with that incredible bass drum and piano line.

The thing is, this movie is much-loved, but that's not the same thing as being *good*! It's very silly and cheesy and it works, I've always liked it as much as anyone has, but that doesn't mean it isn't possible to make a better Flash Gordon movie.

I've always been of the opinion that nobody should ever remake absolutely perfect movies, remaking something like "The Magnificent Seven" is always going to be doomed to fail, because it's inevitable that it will be disappointing compared to the glory of the original. So I think that this is exactly the sort of movie that it's okay to remake, especially if it's made someone with a sense of absurd humor, like Waititi. So if only he hadn't just released the weak "Love And Thunder", I'd be totally eager to see this movie, but now I'm worried...

One of the great things about Flash Gordon is that you can clearly see how much fun they everyone had making it. As badly acted it is at times, the cheap effects, the strange mix of music, the crazy blend of colours, it's the the charm and charisma that everyone shows on screen that brings it all to another level.

Well, all Waititi films seem to have that spirit of fun, and many have the colors and over-the-top acting, and I like the man's taste in Rock. So really, if anyone's going to remake that goofiness, he seems to be the man for the job!

Now if only he hadn't fucked up the latest "Thor" movie, I'd be in a tizzy of anticipation... as it is, I hope the project hasn't been shelved.

reply

I haven't seen that and I didn't like him in Free Guy. Wrong actor for his role, I thought.
