how could people in the movie be so cruel to the Elephant Man character?

watching the Elephant Man movie on Plutotv today and the movie gets dark and depressing where some of the town folk men drag couple of women in the room and force booze down the elephant man's throat and to have the women kiss him.

The heck is wrong with those town folk anyway to act so damn cruel?

Unfortunately, humans tend to fear what they don't understand.
This traces back to cave man days when everything that looked different was considered dangerous.
I like to think we have evolved with better understanding of differences.
But, unfortunately, some people, even today, have not evolved enough.

I don't think I could watch this movie without crying.

It is a great film. Why it did not win an Oscar is beyond me. The Oscar Winner that year was "Ordinary People"
