How did Dennis Franz ever get another acting part?

Not that everyone else's work was stellar in this film, but he was particularly bad.

Ay me, sad hours seem long

You really can't complain about the quality of Acting in a DePalma film for the simple fact that it's ALWAYS terrible. I take it with a grain of salt. His work is about Style. Always has been, always will be. Elaborate setups, lighting, use of music, his famous Split Screens, Long Shots, Strange Edits etc etc ALL take priority over the Acting Chops in his films. Carlitos Way is without a doubt his most balanced film. Still maintains his Visual Style(Without going overboard as he usually does) and we get some really solid performances from start to finish. I have a love/hate feeling with DePalma. He's certainly made some great stuff, Dressed To Kill being one of them but he's also as bad as it gets. It's nothing new though, as many people seem to feel this way about him. There's no doubting his contribution to Cinema but some of the worst acting I've seen has been in his films. It just takes a back seat to the rest of his process.

His films have a comic book vibe. I actually thought the actor who played the kid Peter was very good, he managed to be naturalistic and intelligent despite the ropey dialogue and wacky camera setups. Caine was good too.

He was good in the film .Maybe the cat can explain it to you

Franz performance was over the top. But pretty much everything in this movie is over the top.

I think Franz played it exactly the way de Palma wanted it. If you don't like the performance, blame de Palma, not Dennis Franz.

So his intentionally bad acting was bad or something?

The acting scene with him and Nancy Allen early on reminded me of those bad acted porn scenes in Boogie Nights. I couldn't believe how terrible they were.

The only problem I had with his character was his choice in wardrobe, with the leather jacket, unbutton shirt and tacky jewelry you would think he was dressed to go out to a 1976 disco club.

We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.
