Best zombie movie of all time?

- Some of the best zombie makeup ever.
- Great gore.
- Fantastic soundtrack.
- Some nice nudity.
- Nicely photographed at a GORGEOUS location.
- Cool shit like the zombie vs shark fight!

The only downsides are the dubbing, some shitty editing near the end involving the molotov cocktails and maybe the screenplay (the story is good though). Some would criticize the acting but I'll bundle that with the dubbing.

Honestly this one-upped Dawn of the Dead (1978).

I do not agree but it was really very good, no argument there.

I thought the 2004 remake of Dawn Of The Dead was likely the best zombie movie and was superior.

I liked the hopeless ending of DOTD. I think that’s how a movie about the living dead should end.

Nobody lives.

I also love Dawn of the Dead 2004 but IMO it's the 2nd best zombie movie ever, with Night of the Living Dead being #1.

reply

That is not an unreasonable opinion. Perhaps you are correct.

The zombie-shark fight alone should make it a contender! Very enjoyable film.

It’s definitely my favorite. It’s interesting that it’s one of the few modern zombie films that explores the traditional Haitian myth, rather than a man made disaster causing the outbreak. Fantastic Fulci gore and a full cast of cool actors. Olga Karlatos was beautiful and Al Cliver was dubbed by that familiar voice actor heard in so many of these genre films. That scene in the conquistador grave yard is legendary. I also feel like this really puts a heavy feeling of dread out there as the story moves along. But yeah, my pick for favorite zombie movie and I’d place it in 2nd place behind The Beyond (1981) for Fulci films.

reply

That's one of the things I like about it. The traditional voodoo zombies as opposed to viruses or radiation.

I think this might be my favorite Fulci film... though Don't Torture a Duckling and The Beyond run it close. Those are my top 3 for sure. I've also grown to really appreciate The New York Ripper over the years.

“The New York Ripper”

I’ve been thinking of doing a rewatch of that one.

reply

' Olga Karlatos was beautiful'

She really was.

Check her out in Fulci’s Murder Rock (1984) and Castellari’s Keoma (1976), if you haven’t seen either of those. She’s great in both, in my opinion.

Oh, she has a small but very memorable role in the disaster film Cyclone (1978), if case you have seen that one too. :)

I think she’s fantastic and I wish she had been in more leading roles. After acting she went back to school and got a law degree, and I think she’s currently a judge in Bermuda. Beautiful and interesting lady.

reply

👍 I will! Yes, I remember reading that she 'passed the bar'. And now she's actually a judge?! Good for her! Obviously her brains match her beauty.

Hey Mrmojo!

I watched it last night and it’s now in my Top 10 Zombie movies. Truly a great film!

reply

I’m so glad you liked it! I’m a major Fulci fan and I really love Italian films from this era in general.

What we really need now is a “list your top 10 zombie films” in general chat. :)

reply

True!

reply

There’s two major films I need to knock of my list before I complete my list though:
Dawn of the dead (1978)
One cut of the dead

reply

I just so happened to rewatch Dawn of the Dead (1978) this week, because I had just finished the book. I have to say I just don’t think as much of it as I used to. Being that you haven’t seen it before, I’d love to know your thoughts afterwards.

I’m thinking of a top ten right now.

reply

Since I keep notes of all movies I watch I will try to make a list of all the zombies movies I watched. That would make a monster post!

reply

Having rewatched it today I'd say yes. Great looking zombies, great practical gore effects, some iconic scenes (eye-piercing, zombie v shark), gorgeous women, and some great photography. And I don't think the English dub is too bad. It looks like just about everybody spoke English anyway. McCulloch and Johnson at least dubbed their own voices.

reply

I have to say that the pulsing score by Fabio Frizzi really builds that dread feeling throughout. Great cast and great film.

reply

Oh, definitely. It is a great score.

reply

No.

That would be Return of the Living Dead.
