One movie I wouldn't mind a remake of

I love the original. It's got some great effects (the fireball, the view of the black hole from the Signus bridge), Dante's Inferno ties in well, and the score is incredible.

However, now that more is known about black holes, I think it would be interesting to see a remake that delves into the science aspect a bit more. Keep the score, keep the Inferno bits, but delve into the science vs. religion idea and the theories about what is on the other side. Tie in with some sweet action sets and a new design for Maximillian, and I think it would crush it at the box office.

Absolutely spot on. I normally detest remakes and reboots but after rewatching it there’s so many things they could improve upon. As much as I want to love it, the original just falls flat despite their efforts. They don’t even have to get carried away with special effects set prices but just do more with the story

I agree, the director that made Tron: Legacy wanted to do this remake but eventually it got shelved. I'd definitely change the ending, make it LESS kid friendly, and my god an even badder Maximilian would be incredible. Back to the ending, it's so hard to come up with something satisfying(the original ending is lazy and awful) but I think I could write something that would be a crowd-pleaser.
PS: I also think a remake of The Spirit of St. Louis would be fun.

I agree with less kid-friendly, but don't go full R rating. I'd say VINCENT and BOB were really silly. Make VINCENT more of a realistic robot (whatever that means). A little more scare and tension would be great - the humans behind the mask could be mutilated, Max ripping people apart could be a bit more horrific, the gothic imagery surrounding the Cygnus could be even more heightened. The score is the most terrifying part of the original movie and would fit in well with a darker tone.

Black hole would have made a decent SF horror movie, but it was so all over the place. It's like they tried to fit elements of every popular SF movie of the last decade into the story. Some cute droids and space opera action scenes, the genuinely scary Max and the crew being turned into zombie like half machines, the ponderous 2001 influenced ending.

If they'd really gone hard with the horror angle, it could have been a good one. I thought those scenes were the most effective.

I watched it the other night when it showed on Talking Pictures TV (UK). last saw it must've been decades ago when mightve got it on vhs and I might've seen it at cinema at the time I can't recall was too young, if so it would've been my first ever cinema visit (otherwise it was Superman II which I do remember.). I remember I had the BH annual, poster book, activity book, popup book, novel

Anyway watching it again now the horror aspect is very apparent so could see that being upped for a remake, in fact they'd be better off to have to be more leaning toward a full horror movie a'la Alien, Event Horizon/Sunshine and the more disturbing elements of 2001, than any Star Wars stuff (which was obviously a must at the time, it was pretty much 2001 meets Star Wars meets Captain Nemo) .. Maximillian, the dead cyborg crew, and the ending in Hell could all be upped to the 'max'

Interstellar was kind of a vague remake (complete with cutesy robots and uptodate theories on black holes) but veered more toward 2001 than horror

Possible remake

In November 2009, it was reported that Disney had plans to remake The Black Hole. Director Joseph Kosinski, who also directed Disney's Tron: Legacy (2010) and producer Sean Bailey were attached to the production.[4] By April 2013, Jon Spaihts, who wrote the script for the Alien prequel Prometheus (2012), had signed on as screenwriter.[64]

In 2016, it was announced that the remake was put on hold because Spaihts' script was considered "too dark for a Disney movie". Spaihts commented:

Black Hole was an amazing experience. That was one of those movies I was stuck on until I cracked the beginning, and suddenly it just started to flow. I loved that script. It sits uneasily in Disney's world as a dark epic, and Disney is in a very colorful place. They already have multiple big space epics going, so I don't know how or whether it'll find its way to light of day, but I sure wrote a heck of a movie and was thrilled to do it. It was very faithful to the original but clever in all the ways in that first film was silly, I hope.[65]

In March 2018, it was reported that Emily Carmichael would be writing the screenplay.[66]

In June 2022, Kosinski revealed that the project was initially cancelled due to having numerous similarities to Christopher Nolan's Interstellar (2014). However, he expressed hope at reviving it in the future

I agree this is a movie that could make for an interesting remake, but I have the sour feeling that any remake would try turning it into a dull action-SF flick with cringey Marvel jokes and the like. At the very least, the original is a compelling film, warts and all. A newer version would likely be slicker technically, but script wise overly safe.
