Very slow and boring, I never understand why some people claim it's better than Aliens

I remember the movie being quite boring, even when I was just a kid in elementary school. Everyone knows kids have bad taste; they like garbage because kids don't see enough.

More than 20 years later I just rewatched the movie again, because I never saw the director's cut. OMG, it's more boring than I remember, it was the same story in every horror movie: a monster or psychopath kills people one by one. The movie even had the cliche: the final girl.

I find the slow-burn, tense horror movie more interesting than the high-octane action movie, but I'm not going to argue that Aliens is a great movie that's a lot of fun to watch.

Alien I can appreciate on a lot of levels, and its exploration of the very essence of fear is interesting to me, even when the cinematography and editing isn't injecting dread directly into my system, even when the design and worldbuilding isn't intriguing me and making my imagination fire like its on leaded gasoline for the first time, even when the performances aren't making me love the rich, ensemble cast...

Mostly because the film has atmosphere, immersion, a great soundtrack, ambient noise, gritty and real sets, engaging characters. Same reason Alien Isolation is so highly regarded.

The film Aliens also carries the same qualities, Alien 3 also does to a point--but the story is not AS good as the first two.

Aliens is better than this, true, but this is still a well made film. Lots of atmosphere and scares. A good cast and score as well.

reply

This is a suspense movie. Aliens is a shoot ‘em up action flick. Not really right to say one better than another. Just a matter of taste which the viewer prefers.

To really appreciate "Alien" - you'd probably have to go back to 1979.

I was a boy when I first saw it (in a theater with my Dad). It was not boring at all, it was suspenseful, tense.

The entire audience was locked in, trying to figure out what was going on amongst all the strangeness.

There had never been anything like it up to that point.

From the initial expulsion from the egg on the strange planet - till the end of the film, everyone was locked in. I can remember how quiet the theater was (aside from the gasps during the John Hurt scene).

Not a bit of boredom.

That is a sign of a boring movie, if the movie was truly horrid, you should have heard people scream.

reply

No it wasn't boring.

It was quiet because people were focused. Curious as to what was coming next. You know what a boring movie is? When everyone in the theater is talking. I already alluded to gasps during the John Hurt scene.

I don't remember any loud screams. A lot of HHUUHHHHHHs though. Deep breaths of shock.

Yeah, the kitty cat scene, another one. You could hear a pin drop in the theater. Everyone was totally into it.

Not the least bit boring, in fact, very, well I guess the right word would be - encapturing.

I just watched AGAIN the 1878 "Horse in motion" first movie, and man, was that stupid!
NO plot what so ever
no color
no special effects
way to short at 30 seconds
absolutely ZERO character development.

just a guy riding a horse. So dumb! I don't know why I wasted my time. the whole action seemed boring, tired, and done to death.

reply

Yeah plus the social messaging was WAAAY behind the times. The horse was the best actor in the movie. The shot composition and edit length sucked too. What were they? A bunch of idiots who made it? LOL.

reply

I wonder who even GREEN LIT that Horse in Motion crap? Bet some production company filed bankruptcy due to the low box office returns on it.
I know it's kind of an older film, sure, but it just doesn't hold up today. Can't believe people liked it back in 1878!!! Those morons!!!
Nowdays, you can even find it online to download or watch for free

I heard the movie DIDN'T EVEN get a release on ANY streaming platforms when it came out! What a disaster! What were they even thinking??

reply

Ha.
That's because it sucked. Viewers aren't stupid.
They should do a remake a sequel a prequel a tv series in that universe and gain viewers back. And use lots of cgi
