How did Ash get directly behind Ripley whilst she was typing questions to Mother- the door was closed?
How did the Alien get ahead of Dallas- it was heading horizontally towards him and he climbed down into it? The others had it on radar?
I find it easier to answer questions like these that its a plot hole

Ripley does NOT seem that surprised when he comments on Special Order # 937
That's because she already knew he was there. We (the audience) are surprised by his appearance, not Ripley.
I figure, Ripley heard him come in, probably recognized him from his gait or in her peripheral vision, and chose to ignore him until his comment on Special Order $ 937.
She had no reason to suspect he'd try to kill her, so why even acknowledge his presence before that moment?
And I maintain that he wasn't actually trying to kill her so much as acting on conflicting programming. That's why, instead of just strangling her or staving in her skull with his superior strength, he tried to make her eat a magazine.
You know those Hyperdyne Systems model 120-A/2's were always twitchy.

I just watched it and ... Ash didn't sneak up on Ripley. SHE KNEW HE WAS THERE.
She didn't jump as if she was startled by his presence. She must've heard him come in and just ignored him while teasing answers out of Mother.
