I mean in my head this was always the benchmark and the ones made after were flops, even the marvel films maybe popular but they're not in the same league as this
But skimming through the comments and seeing a lot of posts making digs at this film i have a strange instinct that we now live in a world where people have grown up watching the last 15 years worth of these films and now look back at Superman 1 as some kind of silent movie
Look the elements
Mario Puzo- writer of widely regarded the greatest movie ever made
Marlon Brando- Greatest actor of all time
Gene Hackman- Top 5 Top 10 all timer easily
John Williams- one of the most iconic scores ever written
Richard Donner- Wasn't a yes man and fought the producers
I may be preaching to the choir but just thought i would point out the obvious
To me, it's still the definitive film. All other movies are still trying to either pay homage to it or try to completely differentiate itself from it. But no matter what, people always come back to this film. It's not trying to appease a certain type of fan. It's not trying to connect to 50 other movies to force a franchise. It's not trying to pander or subvert expectations. It's there to just entertain. Their only goal was to make people believe a man could fly. And they did it.
Can it look outdated now? of course, it was made 43 years ago. So the young crowd will always have something to say about it. But I, personally feel, (my own opinion) people who try to put this movie down are just trying to justify what they are watching now; knowing that no matter how cool/hot the actor is, how up to date the special effects are, modern the costume looks....it will NEVER be as good as this movie was.
The original Superman is a fantastic movie, for all the reasons already mentioned. To me, it's the perfect combination of fun, humor, drama, campiness, action, heart and the feel of comic book "over-the-topness".
I'll even defend the "Superman spins the Earth in reverse" scene. Think about it....if you were lucky enough to experience this movie in the theater, as a kid, you saw in a way it was designed to be experienced. And that scene was so powerful at the time. Seeing Lois perish was traumatic. Seeing Superman's reaction, devastation, and feeling of helplessness....was emotional and jarring. The way he looks up at the sky and yells a universe-shattering yell....ranks up there among my favorite cinematic moments. And then, when he shoots himself into the sky and begins to circle the globe, with a full range of devastation and anger on his face....hearing the voice of his father in his head, was just very powerful.
Think about it....he defies his Krypton father, and listens to his Earth father. Sure, it was way over-the-top. But in the comic book world, over-the-top is ok....and this scene was iconic. You just need to allow yourself to watch that scene through the lens of that 12 year old inside you. Then....it will blow you away once again, the way it was always meant to. Just when you were feeling the hopelessness of Lois's death, and the impossibility of being able to fix it--Superman finds a way to make the impossible....possible. It was an emotional rollercoaster, experiencing the loss...and then that miracle. That release of happiness is when a movie is really doing its job.
Now I have to go watch that scene again--for that primal scream. There have been many times when I've wished I could scream like that.
Completely. I don't recall ever seeing Superman THAT angry. That kind of primal 'you have to do SOMETHING' kind of rage. The whole movie is about Kal-El not being a god; not manipulating humans. To help and inspire them but not interfere. His line when Pa Kent died: 'All these powers and I couldn't save him' kind of comes back here because Lois meant so much to him he just couldn't bare the idea of just letting it play out. I thought it was a great moment.
yeh and although it appears so it dosnt mean superman was literally turning the earth backwards.. more he was travelling so fast he was going backwards in time and the earth spinning backward is just the movie interpretation of it.. (of course then that presents the problem of why arent there 2 supermans flying around... but i guess that can be explained away somehow too)
the ending was also kind of apt thematically as he was unable to do anything to help his father as a teen ..now hes a man he might be able to do something (it having been hinted/foreshadowed by Jor El 'it is forbidden for you to interfere with human history')... and also the fact hes 'Superman' he can literally do anything...even the unthinkable...its like for the audience 'ok you think youve seen him do everything..well heres one last surprise.. the absolute impossible..' (almost like 'Endgame' in that they saved that last unthinkable/impossible/insane plot twist of time travel for the final movie - of that phase of MCU anyway)
I like Superman 1 and 2 but also like Man of Steel, BVS, and Justice League. Personally I feel Man of Steel would have been hated if it was exactly like the 90s Superman cartoon just cause it wasn't like the original Reeve movies.
Yeah even a total idiot could have told you that. Man of steel is trash and bvs was a gigantic dumpster fire. One of the worst films in cinematic history.
No I just find it lame how you literally could not come against any point I add so you resorted to ad hominem attacks. You deserve being treated this way after attacking my character simply because I disagreed.
I don't know any Superman fans who don't like 90s Bruce Timm Superman Animated Series. But in that show, Superman dosn't contribute to the total destruction of metropolis. I don't need a carbon copy of the Reeve films. But a movie were Superman actually cares about Human Life, Might be nice.
I am tired of that complaint. It's General Zod and his lackeys who caused that total destruction in Man of Steel. And yet despite it being Zod's fault you seem to act like it's Superman's fault and that he should've been able to take on multiple Kryptonian villains all on his own no problem.
Man of Steel is a trash film! It is a shameless remake of Superman 2. It is like hey look Superman 2 with updated graphics except without any of the charm of good acting or good storytelling. You would like a trash film like that though. You also liked BVS Dawn of Justice! Such a disgustingly terrible film. MARTHA!!!!!
If nothing else its the Definitive Superman film. Every other Superman movie besides Superman 2. Has been mediocre or has outright butchered the character. Looking at you Zack Snyder.
Of the Superman movies, yes. The story is a bit all over the place - moving too fast at some points then slowing to a crawl at others - but it was an attempt to comprehensively adapt the mythos and, importantly, has a sense of heart. It helps that it was constructed by a filmmaker and not a VFX supervisor (Hack Snyder).
I did actually mean the whole comic franchise marvel/justice league world, i am not a comic book fan so i saw Iron man 1 i think and Ant Man randomly but it took me a while to even notice that they were going to be all connected i just thought they were being lazy.
But from the little bits and bobs i have seen i am not compelled to watch them in the slightest, they look to me like if you have seen one you have seen them all.
I am a fan of 70s cinema though and S1 and 2 had elements of greatness and i wonder if the generation now think that because something if fresher and modern that it means better, and they can be quite arrogant about it at the same time,
Music for example now appears to have devolved into one genre now Hip hop, and there is a sad lack of prominent musicians in the mainstream any more, so my thought has always been rather than listen to what ever is current who you won't remember in 3 years i just stick on the Beatles
Hip hop has long outlived its shelf life. It's lasting dominance in the pop world can be attributed to its complete descent into the lowest common denominator of simplistic bass-heavy beats and laughable self-aggrandizement. Anyone who thinks today's rap is in any way rebellious or indicative of a legitimate counterculture has missed the fact that douchebags like Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Ludacris get invited to the White House. Hip hop is the pinnacle of corporate whoredom and music product spoon fed to an uncritical herd. Rap is now the worst the establishment has a to offer. A far cry from the days of Public Enemy to be sure...
I wouldn't assert that Superman '78 is the best superhero film, but it's up there. What distinguishes this film above all, to my mind, is its great wit. It takes the mythology of Superman seriously, yet cleverly pokes fun at itself without descending into lame irony or self-mockery. This I attribute to the great talents involved, particularly Donner, Reeve, and Hackman. The only misfire - a small and forgivable one - is the buffoonery of Ned Beatty's Otis character. My favorite examples of the expert wit of this film are: (1) "Something wrong with the elevator?" (2) "Whoa Jim, that's a bad outfit!" (3) Luthor's teasing of Superman when they first meet after he busts through his hideout door, (4) Clark's realization that modern phone booths don't have the requisite privacy, and (5) the cop conversation about the guy flying around with "bright red boots."
The only superhero film I can think of that approached Superman's well-crafted blend of wit and hero mythology was the first Iron Man. Even that wasn't nearly so amusing, probably because Iron Man isn't quite so absurd in appearance and do-goodery.
The original Superman movie of 1978 captured the look and tone of the comics better than the superhero movies of today do. A happy, well-adjusted superhero was more appealing than the tortured, miserable, mentally ill superheroes of more recent films, who have become tiresome.
