Just got the old school vhs...

I must say, that i found it even more scary, with the grain, and the cropped frame. Whenever Michael pops out you don't quite see him cause he's out of the frame, which I think is more scary. Plus the white mask really seems to pop out even more with the old school vhs format

reply

Yep. That's how I first saw the film in the 80s. It wasn't until the dawn of DVD and then it hit locally in 2000 and on that I got a "better" version of the film.

Do you like the old school vhs version? I gotta admit I kinda do

Me too. I was so used to full screen I was like WTF? But have come to dislike fullscreen as you miss certain things...

Well, of course.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

Haven't seen that version in years.

reply

Me neither cj. Still love popping in the recorded one from tv with the creepy commercials sometimes

TNT who too show it on their monstervision marathon and had a dark back ground with a pumpkin burning where they talked about Halloween and used it for the host. Also other movies they planned on showing cut have the host introduce them

reply

Movies on tv stink. They edit them too much, and too many commercials.

Never had the original on tape, but had II for a while. Same kinda jump scares and whatnot, though.

I like the vhs version, it just has more of a drive in type look to it

reply

Yes, VHS made horror movies very chilling.

And VHS artwork in video stores was the most captivating and provoking section..

Definitely true.

reply

I LOVE vhs artwork and browsing in the store etc. Esp for horror.

I much prefer watching a blu-ray remaster tho as long as they don't clean it up too much and remove the film grain.

reply

I don't need blu-ray, DVD is usually fine, but I still have my Halloween vhs. I haven't watched that in forever, but still have it! It was full screen, though, and I didn't realize how much that sucked until I saw the widescreen!

reply

The blu-ray is honestly worth a look if you haven't. I feel like it's the most faithful transfer, the closest to seeing a good print in '78.

reply

Now that I actually have a Blu-Ray player, I'll consider it! Is there a particular blu-ray release you prefer?

reply

Get the latest 40th anniversary release. It has the number 40 incorporated into the logo at the bottom of the cover. I have the regular and the 4K release. They are both great. The 4K transfer is one of the better 4K versions of an old movie I've seen, so if you have that tech available go with that.

So true my friend

Jaws is another film that is not too bad on vhs as well

reply

Great film. One of my faves.

reply

I love VHS and watched my old VHS of Halloween many times. There is something about it that makes it more enjoyable.

reply

I totally agree the mask just seems more hidden in the vhs format, making it even more scary

reply

Well, it's full screen, so it is more hidden. You don't see him behind Laurie about to stab her, or sit up in the background.
