I remember reading an article many many years back saying that CLYDE was severly beaten by trainer after this movie was made!!!
I am watching the DVD now and Burt Reynolds was not first to be cast. The part was written with Burt in mind but Clint Eastwood wanted the role. Clint Eastwood was the one and only actor cast in the part.

At the time, Clint & Burt were good friends. Clint mentioned to Burt that he was going to do this movie, "Every Which Way But Loose". Burt said if he did, then Burt would do a film that was close to a Dirty Harry movie. When Clint did it, Burt made "Sharky's Machine" a few years later.

Burt Reynolds...blah...he ain't got sh-t on Clint Eastwood. Not trying to piss on anybody's shoes here, but this movie would of sucked with Reynolds, but the Smokey and the Bandit movies would have been 10 times better with Eastwood, Reynolds is an alright actor, he's just kind of overrrated and annoying sometimes

shareI really like Burt in the movies Ive watched with him in it, and Ive liked Clint in the movies Ive seen with him in them... That being said they're both very one dimensional actors. Philo couldve easily been Harry Calaghan on a break from policing, and every character Ive seen Burt play has pretty much been The Bandit.
That being said, both actors have chosen films that compliment their styles. I cant see how Burt couldve played Philo and I cant see how Clint couldve played The Bandit. The Bandit is a wise cracking smart ass while Clint is a very dry comedic actor and Philo is a very dry witted hard ass while Burt is a wise cracking lady's man (these are in their films anyway).

Prior to being picked up by the Warner Brothers studio, the movie's script by Jeremy Joe Kronsberg had been turned down by many of the other major Hollywood studios and production companies. The script originally was intended for Burt Reynolds.
None of the advisors to Clint Eastwood wanted him to do this film. They did not think it was funny or that audiences would get it. It ended up being a huge hit and inspired a money making sequel.
Reportedly, Eastwood was nervous about doing a comedy, and contacted Burt Reynolds for advice, as Reynolds had had a lot of experience doing comedies. Both would later co-star in the period cop comedy City Heat around six years later.
Movie would have been just as good with Burt. They're basically the same person.

I don’t understand the hate towards Burt.
They could have switched them both around in Smokey & the Bandit or The Longest Yard or this movie, and it would have worked.
Same goes for Escape from Alcatraz or Deliverance.
