Prior to being picked up by the Warner Brothers studio, the movie's script by Jeremy Joe Kronsberg had been turned down by many of the other major Hollywood studios and production companies. The script originally was intended for Burt Reynolds.
None of the advisors to Clint Eastwood wanted him to do this film. They did not think it was funny or that audiences would get it. It ended up being a huge hit and inspired a money making sequel.
Reportedly, Eastwood was nervous about doing a comedy, and contacted Burt Reynolds for advice, as Reynolds had had a lot of experience doing comedies. Both would later co-star in the period cop comedy City Heat around six years later.
