Jane Fonda's performance

What do you make of Jane Fonda's performance in this film?
Do you think she deserved the Oscar?
That was the year of Ingrid Bergman (Autumn Sonata), Ellen Burstyn (Same Time, Next Year), Jill Clayburgh (An Unmarried Woman) and Geraldine Page (Interiors).
Just wondering...

Coming Home has always been a favorite of mine but I never thought Jane Fonda's work was her best and it didn't seem Oscar-caliber. The only other film that I've seen in this list is Same Time, Next Year and I thought Ellen Burstyn was very good.

Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullmann were both amazing in Autumn Sonata. I think both were better than Fonda that year. However, it was really pretty close and could have gone either way.

this was my first real exposure to her and I'm blown away by ALL the acting in the film. I mean, what about the bit when Luke comes back to her house. Her nerves then are perfectly portrayed. Look at how she says about the oven that cooks your food while you're out, or goes to light the fire, or even when she says he won't like her record collection. THAT is fine acting. I can't fault it.

I think Jane Fonda is at her absolute best in this film; she's insecure, vulnerable, strong, funny and so human in all these qualities; you can feel, see and hear it all. She was great in Klute but better in Coming Home. This is one of those instances of completely contacting that character and making people know and feel who they are; she was Sally. I thought this film was fabulous.

Beautifully said.

I feel this is one of her most underrated performances, even though she won her second Oscar for it. I guess her real-life views overshadowed her performance and there's some feelings that Bergman, for her final feature film, was robbed. I watched Autumn Sonata for the first time this week and yes, she's a little better than Fonda, but because Jane's excellent performance and role resonated for me more than Ingrid's, and being a huge admirer of Coming Home, I'd have voted for Fonda and I'm delighted she won.

Well I think Fonda deserved her Oscar. She was brilliant in this movie, and so was Bruce Dern, Jon Voigt, and to a extent Penelope Milford. This is one of I think a dozen films which have gotten a nomination in every acting category at the Oscars.

Fonda was ok, but she never goes very deep. On the other hand Dern and Voight were in top form.

Must someone drag this out with every mention of Jane Fonda. She's stated repeatedly that she regrets this serious lapse in judgement.

It's been 38 years. Isn't it time to let go of your grudge?

Fonda is great in this film! The competition is rough...I'd rank Bergman, Clayburgh & Page above Fonda though. Burstyn, who is my fav actress along with Anne Bancroft...equals Fonda in my ranking.

As for wendi14501...I'm sure someone has answered for the american dead soldiers, the name is Richard Nixon and if there's justice in the afterlife he is burning in hell for mass murder!

You are absolutely right!! Like a perfect storm. Or the planets lining up. So much more than just a good movie.

Whoever body doubled her during the sex scene deserved the oscar.

Ingrid Bergman deserved that oscar.

I just watched Coming Home again and the part that really stands out to me is when her husband calls her a "slope *beep* and she freezes with her arms outstretched for a solid couple of minutes as if to reach out to him in his time of need, no words were said by her but I thought it was a great bit of acting...does anyone agree/disagree?

Jane Fonda was amazing in this movie: subtle, poetic and she's my favorite actress ever. As much as I admire Jane Fonda and I love her performance gotta say that Bergman deserved the Oscar (I think she deserved the Oscar for Autumn Sonata more than for the Murder on the Orient Express, though she deserved the award for that too). If she had won, It would've been a beautiful end of a long and remarkable career.

I'd have gone with Bergman, too. Followed by Clayburgh.

According to Haskell Wexler Fonda shot those scenes herself totally nude!

I think Jane deserved Oscar. It's probably one of the most subtle and powerful at the same time female performances I've ever seen. There are some small moments in the movie that literally made my jaw dropped, her acting is so amazing. Like embarassment mixed with confusion in the scene where she's starting to volunteer in hospital and guys are making fun of her. Or her powerless reaction on Jon Voight's cynicism. Or embarassment & nervousness when she's inviting him on dinner. Or beauty & subtlety of sex scene and her relationship with Voight. Or confusion about her feelings towards husband. Or transformation she undergoes, because of relationship with Voight. I could go on & on. It's amazing, deep portrayal of lonely, confused woman and she definitely deserved Oscar for that.

She was brilliant. Definitely one of the best films of her career, IMO, and I'm not even a fan.

Bergman should have won but she already had 3 Oscars. For me, Fonda's performance was definitely not Oscar worthy. I've never been a fan of hers, she shouldn't have won for Klute either.

But, credit where its due, I liked her in Julia (bad film though) and The China Syndrome (good film).

1971 was a pretty bad year for Oscar choices, Fonda winning Best Actress, Hackman winning Best Actor, Friedkin Best Director and Best Picture for The French Connection...

None of them deserved their awards. I think Hackman is a fabulous actor but I've always thought his performance in The French Connection was one of his weakest, he was wrong for the role.
