Continuing my New Years Tradition.

I watch this film every 1st of January, since it's my favourite film of all time, and I want to start the New Year off in a good, positive way. I had a bit of an off day, however as soon as I put this on, it was just joy from start to finish.

I follow with the 2nd and 3rd films on consecutive days.

Usually when you watch a film quite a few times, you pick up on different things. This time it's really noticeable how awesome the Death Star is, when it moves. It's beautiful to watch.

A brilliant film, and just a pure joy to behold.

It is one of the greatest films of all time

reply

It is.

reply

Its not even the greatest in the series. First off the scenes on Tatoonie are boring here compared to Return of the Jedi which features a daring rescue mission and includes an awesome death scene of the galaxys top bounty hunter. Plus there are no ewoks in this one either nor the emperor

reply

“Plus there are no Ewoks”

That’s actually a good thing. No annoying muppets or teddy bears in this. This is the best movie in the series and the only one nominated for Best Picture.

reply

So instead we got the worst light saber battle in the series with 2 guys practically standing still the whole time. And the year 1977 was a very weak year for movies, so this got a nomination, while in 1983, Return of the Jedi had to compete with Scarface, Wargames and Vacation just to name a few

reply

It’s the best light saber battle because they fight like actual medieval knights, and Obi Wan sacrifices himself like a true Jedi. Also the fight only lasts like a minute, the Ewoks are half the movie

1977 was a better year than 1983, with serious movies like Close Encounters and Annie Hall, both commercialized kiddie stuff in the 80s

reply

The best light saber duel was with Obi Wan and Qui Gon against Darth Maul, who had the 2 sided saber. And a better sacrifice was in episode 9 with Kylo giving his power to Rey to finally defeat Palpatine. It had more meaning since that sacrifice defeated the ultimate evil in the galaxy for good

reply

wtf???

reply

Whats so hard to understand? Or do you have questions about Rise of the Skywalker too?

reply

didn’t realize you wanted Kathleen Kennedy to sit on your face so badly

This is one of the reasons stop motion photography still destroys lazy CGI when it comes to special effects.

Massive objects require slow movement which requires an extremely high level of detail that miniatures, bigatures, stop motion models can capture.

CG is always to fast and silly. Take the shot where the Millenium Falcon blasts its way out of Mos Eisely Spaceport. In the original it looks like a Truck getting on the freeway, has mass. In the CGI update it spins around and accelerates way too quick.

Same with the goofy CG dinosaur type creatures they added in.

Nice observations. Thanks for posting.

Yes exactly, and the reason why you can easily spot the special edition changes as the CGI from 1997 looks a 100 times worse than the model work from the 70s.

A nice tradition 👍. Have fun tomorrow with " The Empire strikes back ".

reply

Thank you.

reply

I did the same this year on Jan 1! :)

I agree the CGI spoils it a little.

reply

Very nice!

reply

They just get better with time. And those models and miniatures look better than any CGI.

reply

Absolutely.

What do you mean by the Death Star moves? Its a space station. Stations don't move. The word station is short for stationary, which means standing still.

reply

Of course it moves. Watch the film.

reply

I will. But like you, I watch this every year on New Years Day. I will watch for it next new years day and see if I notice

reply

If it doesn't move how does it get to Alderaan? How does it get from Alderaan to Yavin IV?

Planets orbit around the galaxy around a sun. So sooner or later, Alderaan and Yavin would come within firing range of the Death Star.

reply

To treat this as a serious comment:

Yes, stars rovolves around the center of a galaxy (or at least a spiral type like the Milky Way). That does not mean that Alderaan's system would come anywhere close (in interstellar terms) of Yavin's system.

Assuming that the Star Wars galaxy is similar in size to the Milky Way and that both Alderaan and Yavin rotate around its center at a similar distance as Earth's sun, it would take between 225 and 250 million years to revolve once around the center.

Even if they did, the Death Star would have to move from one star system to another; which means it would have to move.

Millsey, I confess I do not understand these obviously deliberate posts of inane theories and observations. I'm sure some find them amusing. I rate them much less amusing than a bad Dad joke.
