Can Lucas still tamper with the films...or not?
Now that Disney owns the films, can Lucas be asked/forced to give us the original, untampered Star Wars IV to VI?
shareNow that Disney owns the films, can Lucas be asked/forced to give us the original, untampered Star Wars IV to VI?
shareepisode 4 , yes , as fox owns the rights still, everything else is off limits as its property of Lucasfilm
shareIf this is correct, Disney (Kathleen Kennedy) aren't going to release the theatrical versions out of respect for George Lucas's vision.
http://wegotthiscovered.com/movies/disney-probably-wont-release-original-star-wars-trilogy-unaltered-form/
Which is odd because clearly he was okay with it in 2006/2008 when the theatricals were released on DVD. If Kennedy respects Lucas's vision why is Lando attracted to droids? I don't think Lucas is against the originals at all, and I wouldn't be surprised if they soon got announced for 4K UHD Blu-ray. In which case, I hope they do.
He can, I just wish he wouldn't.
shareWhy is this even an issue anymore??? The movies aren't that deep or great to start with. Why does everyone need the unenhanced versions. If you really need to see that Han Shoots first go look at a YouTube clip. Discs are dying out. No one cares.
shareThe original versions are films that made history and set the standards and without which you wouldn't even have today's movies. Therefore we should preserve them in their original forms for their historical significance, and it's sad their own creator can't even bother to do so. You seem like the kind of run-of-the-mill movie "fan" that treats movie-watching as some second-rate activity. Rest assured that there are much more devoted fans, scholars even, that consider this a very serious issue.
shareLmao....it is preserved. There is a copy of it in the Library of Congress. You sure you aren't a run of the mill movie "fan"???? Lol. HOW COULD YOU NOT KNOW THAT????? Plus it was included as extras on a DVD PLUS there are videos of it. Stop being a cheap bastard and go buy yourself a copy for your preservation vault ..πππ
shareAnd who knows what deteriorated state the film is currently in. "Preserved" doesn't mean just "having a copy." It needs to be RESTORED, and regularly too. And you can bet Lucas with all his money isn't likely to do that, and leave it to some independent company with much less resource to do it, if ever. Can you at least try to get informed first instead of getting schooled the hard way?
P.S. I bought that DVD you mentioned it looked awful and unrestored, as expected.
It's a 4k transfer....lol..film doesn't last forever....you don't know anything do you?? Lol
shareThat is a FAN-MADE project which just proves my point that Lucas arrogantly doesn't get involved in its restoration and leaves it to others. YOU are the one who comes off as moronic and don't know a thing about the importance of film restoration.
shareAhhhh hahahahaha.....again there IS A COPY MANY COPIES OUT THERE. We don't need anymore. There are clips of the unaltered scenes on YouTube. So it has been preserved a thousand times over. Why dont you just say what you really mean instead of beating around the bush and making it an argument about film restoration....What is your real issue here????. It's been preserved. With technology today film preservation is easier and more permanent than ever.....so I ask again What is your real issue? (Though I am pretty sure I already know what it is... Lol)
shareWhat many copies?? I'm really talking to MORON here. The ONLY copies that exist are the original negatives and "video masters" for home videos, all of which have only ONE copy. Without that original copy, there would be no Youtube clips, dummy. These early films were shot on PHYSICAL films, not like today's digital video stored on hard drives where you can make copies. So there is only ONE physical copy of each, and that makes film restoration very important. Again, you don't seem to have the very basic expertise about anything except the penchant of giving me the pleasure of schooling you over and over.
shareSchooling..
No I will give you schooling....the whole issue for you is YOU WANT A RESTORED COPY ON 4K to get your chubby little hands on.....Ain't gonna happen pal. Again there is a copy at THE LOC and more than enough copies floating around on Laser Disc,Video and DVD.....we don't need anymore for preservation. The film can burn and it wouldn't matter. It will deteriorate one day eventually anyways.
You are killing me with comments like "there are copies on laserdisc and DVD and therefore we don't need preservation." LOL. You don't have a clue what preservation and restoration are and what they do, do you? Again, a copy at LOC doesn't mean anything if no one restores it. Preservation is only the first step. A film also needs to be repaired and restored, and occasionally we need to look for additional copies. If there isn't a good restored copy to use, you don't even get to see it on laserdisc, DVD, BD, Youtube, anywhere. AFAIK, the last official restoration for the original SW films was done DECADES ago.
Just because you don't like the film doesn't make it any less deserving for restorations. There are cheesy old B-grade horror movies that got beautiful restorations. It's about the history of film which all films have a part in writing.
My schooling can only do so much. Before trying to sound knowledgeable on the Internet, try studying up on the subjects first.
Holy crap....you are missing the entire point...lol..... I do know what film preservation is. But it can all be transferred on more premanent mediums now. There is no longer any reason to hold onto original film elements. We are not talking about the Constitution of the united states here....lol
shareThe transfer process is not perfect because the technology is always improving so you always need the original film prints and negatives. Look at the DVD/Youtube videos from 10 years ago; they look like CRAP now. That's why you always need the original film. See the tremendous ease with which I destroy your arguments and school you? This is what happens someone who actually knows the subject meets someone who only THINKS he knows. Instead of educating yourself in private, you clearly prefer getting educated by way of get EMBARRASSED on the Internet for all to see.
shareFirst: Not Embarrassed because you are wrong. Second there is no reason to continue to restore those prints because the original cut will not be released to the general public.. Third...no one says the prints need to be destroyed. Fourth....all the elements can be viewed from the original film..including the original Title without the scrawl which was added later. Why do we need perfectly pristine images of these elements???? For what??? They are totally viewable as they stand if someone really really needs to see what the film looked like back in 1977. Have news for you. ...its nothing jaw dropping...lol...so you will NOT be getting your chubby hands on a pristine 4k copy ever. You will die without one. Sorry. Time to move on and enjoy the far better Special Editions...
shareIf you are not embarrassed that's because you are too STOOPID to realize you are getting OWNED in epic fashion by someone who knows waaay more than you.
Whether or not a film is released to the public, it STILL needs to be preserved and restored. There are TONS of films being restored without getting released on DVD, BD, streaming, etc. The purpose is to rescue damaged films as SOON as we can. If you wait till release for the public it will probably be too late.
A film as important as the original SW deserves the best restoration it can get. It isn't just about images. The prints may need repair, like any physical item does. Any furniture in your home needs periodic maintenance and repair, so you think a fragile reel of film is any different??
And you will die a total moron too busy getting owned like you are now if you keep up this attitude.
Why is this even an issue anymore??? The movies aren't that deep or great to start with. Why does everyone need the unenhanced versions. If you really need to see that Han Shoots first go look at a YouTube clip. Discs are dying out. No one cares.
Well, he did make the titles of earlier Star Wars flicks, like the one discussed, the one that started it all (improving on aanother's saying that those set the standard for today's flicks) by calling it "Episode IV" AS IF this was the FOURTH film!
FIrst is FIRST, LUKE!
I'm sure he can tamper with them in his home studio or whatever - even though he sold Lucasfilm, I have no doubt he'd have the means to play with the original footage, and probably has some CGI artists who'd work for secret for him. I'm not saying it's likely to happen, but he could if he wanted to ... he just wouldn't be allowed to release it to the public, and certainly not for profit.
shareHe is the maker of the film. If he feels it has to be other way around there is no wrong in it. He can alter it if he wants.
