I'm shocked that Saturday Night Fever is only rated 6.8 on here. Absolutely shocked. I thought it would be 8.2 or so....7.8 minimum.
I haven't read the comments yet....but this is shocking. I've never been this surprised at a rating before.
It definitely is a much better movie than most of the crap out today. IMDB is not a good gauge on how good or bad a movie is.

I’ve tried several times to get into it but I personally find this movie tedious and depressing and boring.
I would group this film with Rocky Horror or Easy Rider. I think you just had to live in the era to best appreciate the film.
shareLet's face it, IMDB is not frequented by people who understand the difference between a movie and a film. Saturday Night Fever is and excellent film that goes over many people's heads, primarily because of the Disco dancing segments. Lots of people hate singing and dancing in their movies, so I am sure those people rated this movie very low. There are probably a good number of people who have just never seen the movie, but hate Disco, and just decide to give the movie a low rating. Either way, great directors, film buffs and respectable critics have given this movie very high ratings. Those people are the only ones who matter.

shareOf course it is dated. WTF, the movie was made in the 70's. Did you think they went into a time machine, filmed the movie now, went back in the past and released it now just so jasonbourne wouldn't be upset about how dated the movie is. Saying a movie that was made 40 years ago is dated, is just so dumb. So tired of the younger generations always thinking that it is a valid criticism to call a movie dated. This guy just jumped on the bandwagon to look like he knows something.

Someone here said maybe some girls think this is a Grease-type film, and when they see it's dark and different they vote it down. Sounds plausible to me.

Exactly, so the rating is very puzzling. I've seen a few ratings that are out of whack compared to the quality of the film. For example An Officer and a Gentleman - which used to be 6.9, and Jerry Maguire, which is at a low 7.3.
Who knows why. It’s a difficult film to watch in many ways. Maybe the low raters were expecting something fun and goofy like Grease and they got the racist, sexist, bleakness of 1970’s Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst et al.

For me it’s a tie between Annette in the back seat and Tony calling her a pig, and Bobby’s death off the Verrazano.
Well, Annette in the car is sad to watch. His friends turn into psychos and Tony himself isn’t much of a saint here either. The "suicide" thing I saw coming a mile away and that reduced some of the impact of the scene. The scenes following with Tony on the subway was great.
I consider most of the arguing scenes at home to be the roughest. The relationship Tony has with his mother and father (the name calling, constant belittling etc), and the religious obsession of the mother. But the scenes work great dramatically and adds color to Tony's character.
Frank Jr. quitting the priesthood and the family dynamics around that was memorable.
