What are some other weird Japanese movies you've seen?

Weird Japanese movies: Any others worth seeing??

I recently saw "Screwed" by Japanese cult-director Teruo Ishii. Not as weird as "House," but the last part of "Screwed" was definitely weird.

watch anything by shuji terayama. if you somehow find this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066468/ you might like it. you'd also probably like shinya tsukamoto, particularly this http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096251/ . or not, but worth a look. this movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064068/ is pretty amazing as well. if you seek out "japanese experimental film", you'll find some interesting things, for sure.

reply

Thanks for the list. I'll have to get busy now and start tracking those down.

tetsuo the iron man will be by far the easiest to find. can get in most dvd stores.

reply

This guy has the right idea. Terayama is god, though Tomato Ketchup is my least favorite film by him.

PASTORAL: tO DIE IN THE COUNTRY is the BEST MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN, though.

I'm sure you saw some if not all of these, but:

Electric Dragon 80.000 V -- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0276935/
Suicide Circle -- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0312843/
Noriko's Dinner Table (aka Suicide Circle 2) -- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468820/
Kairo -- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286751/
St. John's Wort -- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0293478/ (not neccesarily a "good" horror film but some interesting use of CGI and editing; the wraparound is that the characters are making a video game and the film plays out like one. worth a rental)

Don't forget Korean films like:
Spider Forest -- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0407821/
Oasis -- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0320193/ (a drama but a weird one. a great film; i think it's the best film on my list)

Takashi Miike is the king of Japanese weird.

If you like Hausu, you must see Happiness of the Katakuris.

reply

Yep, seen it. Nice weird movie. BTW I also saw "The Quiet Family," which is in many ways a Korean version of HotK. Check it out if you get the chance: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0188503/

I dunno... he has a few "Weird" scenes in quite a few of his movies, but -- and keep in mind I've only seen 60 of his movies -- all in all, his films are usuaully straightforward.

Shozin Fukui, Sogo Ishii, Seijin Suzuki, Toshio Matsumoto, Shuji Terayama, even Shinya Tsukamoto.

I'd say the "weirdest" Japanese film I've seen, by far, is Death Powder.

I'm glad somebody mentioned Happiness of the Katakuris. Thats the first film I thought about while watching House. Can't go wrong with Miike. Visitor Q anyone? Definitely "weird".
