New or Old

Just wanted to know which version you thought was better? The new one with Jim Carrey or this older version?

What are you talking aboot?" - Gotta love Canada! :-)

reply

I haven't seen the old version, but, pondering it.

So, to anyone who has seen the old verson, is it funny at all? I know everyone has a different sense of humor, but, the new one was goofy, and I was wondering if the old one was goofy or silly or was it more mature?

reply

I can only say that the original is good, and I like watching Segal and Fonda. I've only seen one Jim Carrey movie and that was enough for me.

Why ain't you at the garden party you heathen?

reply

Hey, in their own way, I liked them both.

The older version was better by far. The new one goes way overboard with a number of antics and situations, and the slick ending looks like it came out of another movie -- perhaps "The Thomas Crown Affair" or "Ocean's Eleven". The original story looked like something that you could really see happening, whereas the remake is just too slapstick and absurd to be taken seriously.

And, of course, George Segal is a much more subtle comedic actor than Jim Carrey. Carrey is good at manic characters such as The Riddler, but in the original "Fun with Dick and Jane", it's more interesting to watch Segal do a slow burn or treat his boss with glib insincerity.

I like the Enron angle they put into the newer movie, though. Too bad the rest of the film wasn't as clever.

First off, the movie was not meant to be taken seriously. That is why it is a comedy. I think that they both have very good things in them for the time. The new one was more about big business, and the old one was more about the struggle of a overspending family. The new one was a little more sympathetic. I loved Jim in the new one, and loved Jane Fonda.
Taken into perspective, they both did a good job of entertaining. Different time eras will yield much different interpretations of how the movie should be played out. And besides, why remake a movie if you are going to do the exact same thing??

reply

Jim Carrey and Tea Leoni have no class, they're rank amateurs compared to George Segal and Jane Fonda in Every department. The original is very funny, forget the remake.

reply

Between Jane Fonda and Tea Leoni... sure. No disrespect to George Segal, but Jim Carrey is a classic and much better comedian and actor.

reply

To some degree, yes, however, not with this script, this director and this co-star. C'mon, Tea beating out Fonda?! Not a chance. Could give a hoot about her politics, but she is our generation's co-queen of the screen in acting - her and Streep top them all. There are some nice younger actresses these days, but hardly can compare to those mature actresses like MacLaine, Fonda, Redgrave or Streep.

I made the mistake of watching the remake first, which I absolutely hated. It tainted slightly my view of the original when I watched it. But I came to the conclusion that I enjoyed the original. So, I have to say that, for me, the original was much, MUCH better.

The old one absolutely! It'll be loved long after the Jim Carrey one is long forgotten. The new one had no feeling and looked totally fake!

The original was better but the remake still had a few good moments.

The original is a classic. To those too young and who never were raised in the 1970s you might find the new one your thing. But to anyone who did grow up in the 70s and the Jaws generation it's *beep* hilarious.

reply

Definitely the original. Granted neither really have a great plot but the first one benefited from excellent chemistry between George Segal and Jane Fonda something that was horribly missing between Jim Carrey and Tea Leoni. In fact (IMO) both Carey and Leoni seem badly miscast for their roles. Still the remake had a bigger budget, was up to date, and had the usual Jim Carrey antics which is probably why so many others liked it better.
