After 33 years...

"The Deep" remains as boring as it was in 1977. Make that stupefyingly boring, given some of the talent involved. If someone other than Peter Benchley had written the book (and Jaws, the movie, hadn't been such a hit), this piece of drivel would have never made it past concept stage.

Amazing thing is the IMDb spoiler tags identify this movie filling the Horror/Mystery/Adventure/Thriller genres. If only it had been any of those...

Agreed with the OP. This is about as unengaging a "thriller" as you'll find, apart from Jackie Bisset's fine work in the opening sequence which is sure to get the blood pumping, and John Barry's fine work. But underwater sequences are always lethargic and dull (Spielberg was wise enough to use them sparingly), especially in abundance, and the rest of the film is these highly uninteresting characters sitting around "researching". It's comfortably the worst film by Yates that I've seen, including his goofball Cliff Richard vehicle that he debuted with.

Saw this one on TV years ago and couldn't believe how dull it was. The intrigue about heroin ampoules and the possibly deadly moray eel could only be milked for so long. Glad I never paid to see it in a theater. There was just about enough there to make a good episode of some 70s TV action drama but not a blockbuster film with such well known character actors. Kind of wish I'd bought one of those Jacqueline Bisset posters though. Maybe not boring exactly but very disappointing.

Eeek!!! I'm getting dressed.

About the only thing memorable about that movie, to me, was the fight scene where the guy tried to off Robert Tessier's character with the propeller of an outboard motor. Of course Bob was able to avert catastrophe before he and the other guy locked each other in a deadly strangle hold.

I don't get the whole boring thing here. This movie was an adventure, it had great locations, Ms Bisset in a wet t-shirt, voodoo, the great robert shaw, nick nolte an interesting plot, more adventure, but whatever, to each his own. I find comic book movies so boring I can't even begin to watch them, spider man, iron man, Batman etc who the "F" cares?

Right on!

I want the deep to be good , it has all the elements , onlt bits i remember are the outboard , an eel , and hoovering up gold ... its been about 40 years lol
..maybe if i go in not expecting much itll seem ok

Superhero movies suck balls.

I found it a pretty good movie and did not get bored at all. I would not like Fast And Furious. Some people are just the opposite, adrenaline junkie types.

Just watched it for the first time, and I found it very entertaining, with a few scenes that generated some solid suspense. Much better a lot of today's current crop of over-adrenalized, CGI-riddled extravaganzas.

Saw it 36 yrs ago and again this past weekend and it remains unimpressive. A waste of talent but nice paychecks for Shaw, Bisset, and Nolte. Treats death in a highly juvenile -- practically humorous -- manner. Only real upside is the showcasing of Bisset's body. It's clear it piggybacked on Benchley's fame with Jaws and fell flat. And a moray eel as a heavy? -- Ridiculous!

Life is a state of mind.

Just watched it for my first time and I really liked it, I loved how Jacqueline Bisset's nipples were saying hello to us in the first diving scene. The fate of Lou Gossett was great too.

This movie was and is so boring. Then again if it wasn't I never would of gotten engaged the night my boy friend took me to see it. We ended up necking instead and declaring our love and making plans. I am again watching this movie 38 years later bored once again.

The film did a good job of building tension and intrigue.

Sometimes I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone. Not sure what the complaints are all about. Not a boring film at all.
