WHITE PEOPLE...WHAT DO YOU...

THINK about this film and slavery in general? Do you really feel bad for what your ancestors did to blacks, do you care or do you feel it has nothing to do with you?

reply

I'm responding to this without reading the responses of anyone else ....... as a white American ...... do I like this part of our American history .... of course not and I think it's horrible it happened and I don't think it should be forgotten and if you're an American (no matter what color you are - white, black, or any shade in-between) this period of time is party of the history of the country you live in. As far as "Do I really feel bad for what my ancestors did to blacks?" ..... no, because my ancestors lived in the northeast United States and did not own slaves and did not take part of the slave trade. Do I feel bad in how whites in general treated blacks during during the time of slavery ..... of course I do. Do I feel bad in how some whites treat blacks now ..... yes because those whites make the rest of us look like *beep* which we're not. (I also think reverse discrimination exists too. SOME blacks hate whites just because they're white, which is wrong too.)

reply

I think history should be studied and remembered. I can remember Rome without hating Italians. I think the Jews can remember WW2 without hating Germans. I can remember slavery without hating whites. I think the primary reason blacks are having trouble moving on is that a disparity still exists between whites and blacks. They generally live to a very large degree, in totally different worlds (especially in regards to economics). Many of the barriers have been removed but there is still a little work that we all need to do. Blacks are about 15% of the American people so Obama could never be elected without major support from white Americans! America may not be ready for a black president but electing one would strongly suggest that a major change has occurred in general attitudes. It would also send a stronger affirmation to blacks that America also belongs to its black citizens too (truly, to anyone that is an American).

The main objective of Affirmative Action was to help level the playing field. Afterward there would be no need for such an adjustment. I strongly believe in individual achievement, perseverance and hard work! The only question is that in 2008, do whites and blacks really have the same opportunities (remember that economics strongly figures into the question)?

God, why does there always have to be some idiot that takes away from the greatness of this series to be totally ignorant and want to pick a fight.

RE: WHITE PEOPLE?

Give me a break! What a tool.

Jeez...

Doesn't it suck that there is always some nimrod troll on these boards at all times?
Instead of meaningful discussion about a great groundbreaking film that brought the reality of slavery to every household in America, a beloved film to so many, both black and white, is lost by some ignorant lout that spouts hate.
"The white man is the devil!"
It's stupid generalizations like this that formed the slavery mentality and continue to pollute our country to this day. This angry, ignorant person is so caught up in his own hate and shortcomings, he uses this discussion board for this great film to spout his extremely narrow view of the complex reality of slavery in America to reverse racist tirades.
Every white man in America does not have ancestors that owned slaves, I am sorry to inform you, you ignorant, uneducated sorry excuse for an African-American.
Quit playing the race card (Which I'm sure you've been doing all your life) and make something of yourself; make the world a better place in even the smallest way and let go of your hate and self-loathing.
Quit projecting your failures upon everybody else, and contribute something positive instead of placing blame on every Cacausian on the planet. That thinking is old and outdated, much like slavery and white supremacy.
But sadly, there are still scores of uneducated masses who stand on the extreme right and left when it comes to the subject of civil rights in this country and the history of slavery.
You sir, are the embarrassing stereotype that educated blacks shun; you are the first one in the crowd to hurl a brick, the first one to lose control and strike out at anyone because of the way they look and the color of their skin. You would be the first to start looting in a riot. You are no different from the white trash that don their hoods and burn crosses. You are the opitomy of hate and ignorance who's only recourse is to hurl blame and create chaos.
You are the nightmare in Martin Luther King Jr's Dream.
You are hate, mob mentality, jealousy, a real loser without a clue or purpose in life but to post hate propoganda on a board that doesn't deserve your negative thinking.
"Roots" was a great mini-series that made history and opened many eyes and many doors to Afican-Americans. The film stands on it's own and will always be something very special in many peoples lives. Don't use this board for your hate propoganda. Give this film and board the respect it deserves.
At least think about it.

The OP asked a question to try and ascertain what feelings Roots stirred in white viewers. If you don't want to answer the question fair enough but your response is written as though you didn't actually read the question. There was no negative statement made about white people so I honestly do not understand why the vitriol... If your reply isn't directed at the OP then who is it that got you so het up?

reply

No , maybe you need to reread the post. Look, THe OP states in his Subject Line -

Do you really feel bad for what your ancestors did to blacks, do you care or do you feel it has nothing to do with you?

"YOUR ANCESTORS"

Oh I'm sorry, that must mean me because I'm white!

That's a presumptuous, accusatory, ignorant and just plain stupid thing to state. It begs for a rebuttal. This type of blanket statement is uneducated and devoid of fact. It's one angry black man who groups every white man as the villian. I'm sure this guy is a Farigan fan. How much do you wanna bet. It's just reverse racism, pure and simple.

My ancestor were poor Italin immigrants. I am SURE they never owned slaves.
No person in their right mind thinks slavery (in ANY form, including the Jews, uh, remember them, the forgotten slaves) was right.

But for some ignorant fool to post such an accusatory subject deserve to be blasted. I thought "Roots" was a great mini-series as do thousands of people both black and white. The OP's view is as narrow as the men that wear sheets and burn crosses. Hate is colorblind, it works in black or white. It's the great equalizer.

Does the race card have to rear it's ugly head whenever there is a discussion about anything having to do with slavery or civil rights.

I guess so. Sorry, but I came to this post to praise the film, not account for my ancestors, who in no way, shape or form had ANYTHING to do with slavery. Sorry, but I am exempt from the blame. Sorry if that disappoints you or the OP, but it's true.

I replied to this thread about 50 posts ago and I realized from subsequent comments tha I forgot a major point that needs to be made.

I essentially said that, being whitek I was appauled at the treatment of slaves but I also felt that I never opressed anyone (on purpose) and thatwe should be paying attention to now, not then.

What I would add now would be that I never actually expressed the greatness of this series. Yes some of the story may have been, um, .. less than true and whatnot, but it still gets across the magnitude of the institution of slavery.

On a related subject: Me and my stepdaughter recently took a class call "Inercultual and Women's film." About halfway through the class She pointed out that she though that classes like that, instead of helping kill sereotypes, keep them alive by teaching them in a classroom environment.

I don't know if that's true or not but I do know that Roots has the ability to open old wounds... on the positive side howeveer, it also has the ability to be a cathartic experience and help heal wounds.

I further believe that if you are caught in a cycle like racism or being the victim of racism. I think you would be helped by watching Babylon 5.. yes it's Science Fiction.. but I see in that show the beginnings of our society healing.. You have to watch the whole thing though :)

So there are some random ideas for you. Hope one or two help.

I am white.. Racism has always been something that should be mourned. It's not guilt that should be felt, it's sadness that this point was reached and excepted as a normal thing. The emotion we are calling "Guilt' Is a bit of a misnomer since you can only carry guilt for something YOU could have changed.

What I feel is not guilt, what I feel is a disgust that any man or group of men could cause such atrocities based on something as stupid as the color of someone's skin. The term guilt should be replaced by a different word.. one I would not presume to coin.

Any white people who feel guilt need to try to resolve to do anything THEY can do to not create any NEW racism.

Being born nearly a hundred years after slavery ended I have no guilt about it. One of my great grandfather's owned a slave. That doesn't have anything to do with me. Somewhere in this thread I read it said that blacks should just get over it and move on. I have to agree. It didn't happen to them.

It was terrible and it should never have happened. It is abominable how men treat their fellow men. But we can't change what we had no part of.

If you read your Bible, when Moses led the Israelite slaves out of Egypt, the Egyptians were black, and the Israelites were white. As a black person, do you feel bad about that? Didn't think so.

The fact is that the reason this country grew and prospered as quickly as it did is because of slavery. This country was built on the backs of the African slaves.

It is also a fact that the vast majority of the slaves were sold to the white traders by their own people. Or do you honestly think a slave ship crew of 20 men could capture 200 Africans on their own land without any help?

I'm white, and I have no feelings about this. Whites have had their turn at slavery, the country is what it is today because of slavery, and if you think about it, the blacks did this to themselves. As DC Talk said "We're Colored People, and we live in a tainted place. We're Colored people and they call us the Human Race. We've got a history so full of mistakes. We're Colored People, and we're saved by a Holy Grace." (The song is called Colored People, in case you can't tell)

A1, I got divorced about 12 years ago. While it was not my choice, believe me I am trying to move on. 12 years later it is still affecting my life financially and emotionally. Now no one wants to move on more than I do but a lot of it is still right in my face, affecting me today.

I once took a course that taught us how corporations are setup and function in business. The instructor said something I have never forgotten which was: “today pays for yesterday and tomorrow will pay for today”. I truly believe things that happened 4,000 years ago DO indirectly affect us all but I think we tend to focus more attention on things that directly affect us today (and without addressing the roots you will never fully destroy a weed). It’s really the racism of the past that has created such dysfunction in the present. Isn’t that what is happening today in Ireland, Israel, the Middle East in general, etc.?

Moving on can only be accomplished when we fully confront the demons that possess us! The Exorcist needed for that is usually found in places where 12-step programs are followed.

This is one subject nobody ever has the perfect answer to in my opinion of course. Slavery was and is a horrible thing and should not be allowed in any corner of the world. Personally I'm very sorry for all that happened to black people brought here for sale as slaves. To the best of my knowledge nobody in my family had the funds to buy or the land to require the use of slaves. That does not by any stretch of the imagination mean some weren't racist. Being from Mississippi you grow up with those things around you and knowing what happens. My parents taught us to realize that no person of any color should ever be judged by us much less by the color of their skin. A person who makes comments such as "all those" or "they always" is a racist no matter their color. So I grew up being called N_______ lover and such names because I had friends who were black. I stil do and always will not because of their skin color but because they are good people. If you are looking for a reason to hate someone you will find a reason and that goes for EVERYONE, not just white people.

I feel no guilt, then again my ancestors were not slave owners so I should feel no guilt nor should any other living white person to be honest. Should black people in Africa feel guilty for letting their own people be sold or captured? As far as I know most Africans dont even consider american blacks to be african, talk about emancipation...

"Somewhere in this thread I read it said that blacks should just get over it and move on. I have to agree. It didn't happen to them."

Nobody tells the Jews to "GET OVER IT" when they talk about the Holocost (which was also horrible), but when it comes to Blacks we should just GET OVER IT ! Slavery may be over technically, but the RESULTS of slavery are still here today.

Did 6 to 11 million blacks die in slavery? I didn't think so. The Holocaust is a much more recent event. That not withstanding millions of blacks didn't die.

Well, considering that my own Scandinavian ancestors enslaved each other, and also my Germanic ancestors were sold in the Roman slave market....I don't really think about it much.

Excuse me ??? FYI Through SLAVERY, LYNCHINGS, BURNINGS, BOMBS, and countless other things, BILLIONS of blacks have DIED! And you want to talk about "recent events" ?? How about Emmit Till, the four Little Girls who got BLOWN UP, Rosewood, Medger Evers, the MILIIONS of blacks who were killed during the Civil rights movement, The guy who was shot 41 TIMES for pulling out his WALLET, SEAN BELL, who was KILLED on his WEDDING DAY and the cops were found NOT GUILTY, and the list goes on and on and on. Slavery may mean nothing to YOU, but don't minimize the effect that it had on OTHERS !

And also FYI (and this is a little known fact), there was a BLACK HOLOCAUST !( www.blackholocaustmuseum.org)

i'm white and from alabama but my ancestors didn't own slaves. most southerns were too poor to own slaves. slavery is a sad part of american history but your question is somewhat of a moot point as all races have enslaved, and people by and large are cruel and uncaring to each other. it's not as if much has changed.
