WHITE PEOPLE...WHAT DO YOU...
THINK about this film and slavery in general? Do you really feel bad for what your ancestors did to blacks, do you care or do you feel it has nothing to do with you?

shareWell as my great gram used to say, "That cat that sleeps on the wall can see what is growing in both gardens." A post going strong since April I must say that is a rather interesting thing as well as a topic, 'the sins of the father shall lay down up the son', 'house's rise and fall', 'the blood stained family'.
No, it has nothing to do with me. My father's family is Mexican, been in America since Santanna fell the american Amry. We didn't cross the border, the border crossed us. Going back to my great great grandfather, Mexican American Army, fought in Cuba against the spanish he was a Rough Rider. Who feels sarrow for me, your ancestors were brought against their will to America. My ancestors became slaves on their own land, our history, our treasure or culture sit in French, Spanish and British musems. Who owe's us an apology?
My mother's family, Irish. She is the first born American, my grand parent's were right off the boat Mic's. Their ancestors fought the British and England's war's. My great grand dad had six brother's all died in the first World War, who owe's my couisn's an apology?
Who Owe's the Japanese American's forced tolive in camps during WW2? The Native American's or The Russian's or The French? How long do people need to labor the crimes of their ancestor's? And that is our problem, we all like to think we didn't do something or it never happened. We need to get past what happened, we can learn alot from our past but their must be a focus on the future. And we will get past it, I am the reason.
Some would call me a 'half-breed' , 'multi ethnic' 'interracial' I am a lot of things to a lot of people but I am one of the many. The New American. I am a Mexican Irish American, I drink Guinness, listen to Heavy Metal, can't speak a word of spanish and been to 12 MOTORHEAD shows in Canada.
and there are more of us,

Well, I personally feel slavery was a terrible thing. But, you should also not associate ALL white Americans as being ancestors of slave owners. My ancestors came to America as Jewish immigrants from Russia in 1890, so we had nothing to do with slavery.
I asked for ketchup, I'm eating salad here!
Well, considering the fact that my ancestors didn't land in the USA untill after slavery ended, therefore, they didn't have anything to do with it, and neither do I.
Not all white people's ancestors were slave owners. Not all of them were even in this country during slavery. Often times, uneducated people asume that every single white person in the USA is the descendant of multiple big rich horrific slave owners, and that because of it, they should feel guilty and be ashamed of themselves. When in reality, many American caucasians relatives did not even come to this country untill the early 1900's. Or they were poor immigrants that couldn't even aford slaves, if they did get to the USA during slavery. Not to mention, If a white person is from the north, chances are that's where their ancestors came from. Thus, they were not slave owners.
Saying that every single caucasian person should feel bad for something SOME white people did 150 years ago is like saying every single person of Asian decent, even the ones who weren't born untill the 1980's or '90's, should feel bad for what Pol Pot did.

Actually, what's really funny, is that I honestly have known people SO ignorant that they actually thought it was only possible for whites to be racist, and nobody else. When I told her about all the times racist comments/things have been done to me by black or hispanic people, she laughed and said, "oh, I guess they just didnt' like you." HA! But then when somethign similar happened, and a black person was the butt of the abuse, no matter what the situation, she was all, "OH, it's racism, racism!!! They didn't give me a bag with my soda!"

I'm White and I used to spout racist crap until I saw the Rodney King beating for the first time. I said that in an earlier post and people jumped on me by saying that King was high and all kinds of stuff. Let me clarify.. I saw the Rodney King beating and that made me question everything I'd been told about black people. A process that will continue (hopefully) until I'm wormfood.
So, that's who I am :)
To answer you, when I took Sociology in college we were taught that the suffix -ist after any minority or ethnic group implies a seperation between the group in authority (The best social location) and those in worse social locations. By this definition (which is not the only one, but it's the one I'M using) Someone can be predjudiced against a group of people and not be racist. Racism implies that there is a seperation with one group on the top and whatever group is on the bottom. Things like segregation where black people and white people are kept seperated and black are kept out of power are racist.
I hope I'm making sense here.. but one offshoot of this definition is that black people, being a minority group, cannot be racist.
BUT FEAR NOT!! The social sciences don't let black people (Or any other race.. I'm just using black people because of the board I'm on... Could be talking about ethnic chinese but I don't remember a lot of ethnic Chinese in Roots) off that easy! They created a new term to be more expressive.
So it breaks down like this... In the US
1. White people can be racist if they believe blacks should not receive the same basic services as whites (White suburbanites saying that Black people should "Get a Job" fit in this catagory.
2. White people can be predjudiced against black people (In sociology there are about 100 names for ways whites and black can be biased and/or predjudiced against one another.. there's the self-serving bias.. you can commit the fundamental attribution error and on and on.. A white guy who says "Black people whine about slavery" or such garbage is not technically a racist because he doesn't want to take away black people's rights as a whole.. (Except freedom of speech.. and everyone has wanted to take away SOMEONE'S freedom of speech at some point in their lives.. I imagine if this post gets much longer.. they'll wanna take mine away :))
3. A black person can't be racist because they're not in the top positions (In politics and so on..) to do things like that.. But they CAN Be... drumroll please.. RACIALLY INTOLERANT
Now.. like I said at the beginning, this is pretty arcane stuff I learned in sociology class. It is possible however that some of the "Stupid" people who have said that black people can't be racist might have taken a class with similar theoretic foundations.
Let me just finish by saying that if I have offended ANYONE, that was not my intent and I do not claim to advocate this theory, I'm just pointing out that this kind of thinking exists.
My name... is GEO!!!
I've heard that explanation before, that you can only be racist if you're in the top group. I don't agree with it, but if that were true, than black people CLOUD be racist, because there are black people who are socially and economically above whites! For example, Namoi Cample is "above" the white girl who took your order at Mcdonalds (socially and economically) right? So if she didn't like white people, we WOULD be able to call her racist, because of her top notch status.
Besides, hating an entire group of people based on their physical apperance doesn't have anything to do with how much money you have or how much power you have, it has to do with your personal beliefs and how you were raised. The other idea, that you and I were both taught in sociology, that you can only be racist in the authority positions, is basically just an idea some other sociologist had at one point. Yeah, it's in the book, but that's because he/she somehow managed to convince people it was true.

I think slavery was a terrible thing, but it is in fact...history.
My answer is "No", I do not feel as though I have anything to do with what happened in the past.

yo funky monky, you are 100% correct. Some ignorant people with absolutly no education never think about the things you just mentioned for the simple fact that it makes it easier for them to complain and put other people down. It also gives them a crutch to lean on in any argument they might get in with white people, considering people like that are obsessed with race.

I disagree with this line of thought simply because The OP did something that is actually laudable, he ASKED A QUESTION.. if more people did that instead of just blurting out their opinions at the beginning of a thread, we might actually start working towards some understanding here.
We are gifted with the most powerful communication tool EVER devised by the human race, I'd like to think the internet can be used to do something rather than download porn and .. and.. what else do we do on the internet again?.. Well anyway, I don't think that was my point.
All kidding aside though, the anonymity of the internet, combined with the equilizing effects of the written word gives us a chance we've never had before. Namely, the chance to speak AS individuals TO individuals about things that would start a riot if you did it out in the world.
I suggest we use it.

I am white. Saw Roots in the 1976-1977 school year, when I was in 4th grade. My grandma and mom traced out my family's ancestry when I was a kid. None of my ancestors happened to have owned slaves. They were all in Canada or living in areas in the US where slaves were not common. None of them were rich. So I don't feel sickened, angry, bad, guilty,or regret about them. I do feel these things, though, as an American citizen, about what people in my country once did to other people in my country.
shareWhy should I care what my ancestors did? That's the problem with black people, always dwelling on the past, as if black people alive today were enslaved, and white people alive today enslaved them. The fact is no one alive today had anything to do with slavery, so stop trying to guilt trip us into giving you reparations or whatever the hell you want out of us. Stop feeling sorry for yourselves, and make something out of yourself using your own power instead of expecting the white man to do it for you.
And as I side note, there's one thing that annoys me more than black people, and that's the white self-hating liberals who allow black people to constantly use the race card and cry racism and use their race to their advantage through quotas and affirmative action, solely because those white liberals feel guilty about something their distant ancestors did. These self-loathing black apologists disgust me.
You should care because you owe EVERYTHING to your ancestors!!!!!
I suppose you don’t think you benefit in any way by what your forbearers did? The country was built by hard work but also by killing and stealing (i.e. land, property, slaves, etc.). That allowed a standard of living to be achieved which is largely based on financial autonomy!!! Without money, there would be no USA, no constitution, free speech, etc. A son intrinsically inherits whatever his forefathers bequeath him (including the freedom or the lack thereof to “pursue happiness” as stated in the Declaration of Independence). You directly benefit by what your forbearers did but I seriously doubt you will ever consider returning anything your ancestors “acquired” to its rightful owners!!!! That makes you a hypocrite:
Globally, Whites make up about 30% of the world's population (approx. 2 billion people). What percentage of the world's resources are actually owned and controlled by Whites? About 70%!
Globally, Blacks make up about 15% of the world's population (approx. 1 billion people). What percentage of the world's resources are actually owned and controlled by Blacks? Less than 10%! Even the Africans themselves don’t own most of the coal, oil, diamonds, gold and copper residing on their own continent!
Does that really seem fair to you? It is certainly no coincidence but do you realize all the criminal, immoral things your forbearers did to tip the scales in their/your favor? Are you really that naive? Are you sure you want Black people to follow the example set by your ancestors?
I am white... and I'm sad to say that black people ARE following our example. This is this worst thing they could do. That road can only lead to unhappiness. After controlling the world for a thousand years are white people happy? Do you know ONE truly happy white person? If you think you do look up the word Veneer(Crap SP?) in the dictionary.
All of the happiest and most life-affirming people I've ever met were um "people of color" indians or africans or, during one REALLY smoked out night an Austrailian aboriginee who looked like that freaky voodoo chick prom Pirates of the Caribbean.. her name was Trinity and she could put her legs behind her head and still get into nine sexual positions...
Wait.. I don't think that was my point.. African-Americans out there (I never thought I'd say this) you'd be probably better off seeing us as oppressors.. not role models.. don't assimilate our culture if you can help it... you will lose your soul like Rudger Haur did when he made Blind Fury.
My name... is GEO!!!
This question is being addressed to REGULAR, OPEN-MINDED people. Not IGNORANT. RACIST, NARROWMINDED, KKK, SKINHEADS like you !! I know what people like you think and that's fine, but don't come to a board about a BLACK MOVIE just to spread your bigoted views !! Your screename "GRANDWIZARD" says it all !!
SEE IT, BELIEVE IT, CLAIM IT, REICEIVE IT !!!

Stop feeling sorry for yourselves, and make something out of yourself using your own power instead of expecting the white man to do it for you
And no one is expecting the white man to do it for them
but it is expected for the white man to stop being racist
and admit that all the money/benefits that was given to them (and stolen from black people's labor) and passed on to their legacies was due to the hard work of slaves who did not benefit.
They were robbed.

Like others have said, this isn't about what MY ancestors did to anyone...my people emigrated to the US from Sweden in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and therefore never owned black slaves.
That being said, I am HORRIFIED by what people did to other people. I realize that what is depicted in Roots isn't nearly as bad as what really happened...there's no way that the reality could be shown on TV as it's far too violent.
I encourage my children to watch/read stories like these - about slavery, about the Holocaust, about the Crusades, about the treatment of the native Americans - so they can understand how grim human history has been and how grim it will continue to be if we cannot view other human beings as people like us. That seems to be the one common thread...any time one group of people begins to view another as less than them...less intelligent, less civilized, less spiritually enlightened, or whatever...there's going to be trouble and probably someone is going to suffer greatly.
The pompous attitude of Europeans and later Americans that they are the standard of humanity...that anyone who differs from them in culture or religion must somehow be inferior...makes me sick. It's that attitude that most likely enabled the first slave traders to think, "Gee, these people live in huts rather than the kinds of houses I'm used to, and instead of speaking a real language like English (or Dutch, or French) they just speak some sort of mumbo jumbo...they must be less human than me somehow."
Of course, when stated that way, my children just look at me and say, "Boy, that's pretty stupid." Of course it is! That white supremist crap thinking IS stupid!!! The people in African villages at that time didn't build the sorts of houses that the Europeans did BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T NEED TO! Why in the heck would intelligent people waste their time building much bigger, stronger, warmer houses than they needed to? They wouldn't and they didn't. And the idea that someone isn't making sense just because you don't understand their language? Most of us outgrow that sort of thinking before age 5.
It would be so ridiculous, if it were not for the millions of people who were killed or otherwise harmed by that sort of thinking. So that's the message I try to impart to my children. Yes, this really happened (OK...some of Roots isn't exactly factual, but something like EVERY situation depicted happened to someone...probably several someones). Yes, the thinking that allowed it to happen is stupid, but very, very dangerous. And how do we keep it from happening in our generation? Learning about the past, and also keeping an open mind about people. I don't go out of my way to "integrate" my children artificially with people of other backgrounds, but when it happens naturally, I'm not afraid of it, nor am I afraid of talking about it. My children have friends who are black, who are Asian, who are hispanic. They have different customs than our family. They eat different sorts of food than our family. But first and foremost, they are PEOPLE.

ITA, There are many languages in the African culture and they didn't all live in huts, that's what many people don't know. There is a HUGE misconception about African people because all we see about Africa in the media are poor and starving kids or a jungle. There are places in Africa that look like New York City, but that's NEVER seen.
