I thought this was a well known film,am I just getting old?

I was talking to a couple of people I work with, they are maybe in their early 40s about this film and they had never heard of it or seen it.

I am British, aged 55 and this film has often been on British tv and I thought it was a well known film but is it a generational thing?

It’s pretty well known I’d say.

It's a great movie, perhaps my favorite among all the political paranoia genre that flourished in the 1970s. I seriously doubt "Marathon Man" is known to anyone younger than 40 except for those in the film industry in one form or another, or content-creating streamers who specialize in film criticism. That said, I'd wager that the "is it safe?" meme and the associated dental torture lives on more widely than the film itself. I've seen about ten dentists in my adult years and they all know the infamous torture scene. Less than half have actually seen the movie.

I think it is somewhat well known as Dustin Hoffman is pretty famous.

Most people are only familiar with movies from their childhood and after. Pathetic, but true.
