To Those Who Want It on DVD...

I'm not sure if its at every Wal-Mart, but they have a $5.50 DVD bin with a bunch of movies. I got my copy of "The Street Fighter" as a part of a DVD called "Martial Arts Samurai Pack", which also features "Legend of the Eight Samurai", "Bruce Lee... The Man, The Myth" and "Kung Fu, Punch of Death". The DVD is published by Digital Value Entertainment, distributed by Hannover House. I picked mine up at one of the Wal-Marts in Valdosta, Ga. This is just a helpful direction for anyone who wishes to own a copy of the film (though it doesn't have a rating of the movies on the DVD, I do not know if its an R rated version or if its the uncut version. The movie is English dubbed, probably the original dub from when they first released it over here in America). Anyways, I figured I'd post a heads up.

A company called Front Row Entertainment has put it out on DVD in widescreen. Pity that the 10 Faces thing couldn't have done the same.

i have this same version and i'm pretty sure it's uncutt thought i'm not sure i've only watched the disk once and i was out of the room cooking during most of it.. i can say that it is widescreen and the transfer isn't bad considering..

reply

I got this set from Madacy home Video. Called The Best Of Sonny Chiba. It has the 3 street fighter movies, widescreen, an i think its uncut...it was only like 10.99.

I got a Sonny Chiba box set with the movies "The Street Fighter", "Return of the Street Fighter", "Sister Street Fighter", "The Street Fighters Last Revenge", "Dragon Princess", and "The Bodyguard". I got all those movies for only 20 bucks, I think I bought them at Suncoast.

It's kind of hard to distinguish between all the bargain releases The Street Fighter has had, but I've tried a lot of them and I think the best two versions are either the release from Front Row, which features a great (for the money) widescreen transfer probably off VHS, or the release from another bargain company called Brentwood and/or BCI Eclipse, which released the movie individually and as part of the "10 Faces of Sonny Chiba" and "Martial Arts Masters" 10-DVD sets. Like I say, the Front Row has a pretty good picture, but the Brentwood has a passable widescreen transfer, PLUS the original Japanese soundtrack along with the English dub. However this won't do you much good because it doesn't have subtitles.
What I don't understand is if Quentin Tarantino wants to put his name on a few martial arts pictures (e.g. "Iron Monkey" and "Hero") like he's King *beep* then why can't "The Street Fighter" benefit from that? We all know he's a fan of the movie, he has enough clout to clear up any licensing problems, and a good DVD release would be nice. Even forgoing Tarantino, what about New Line? Did they lose the distribution rights or something? Even if they did a release similar to the one they did for The Mack, I'd be satisfied.

They beeped me. Pansies.

The reason why Tarantino's name was put on the movie's titles was so that they could get released. Hero was going to have been cut up, but Tarantino got somewhat angry with the heads of Miramax. They came to an agreement that they would release it uncut in theaters if they could put "Quentin Tarantino presents" on all posters and the like. "Iron Monkey" on the other hand, his name is on there just so it would get released here in the USA.

Ahh, The Street Fighter on DVD... how we all await a definitive edition. Right now, the double feature DVDs from Diamond DVD are pretty good, one containing uncut and widescreen prints of the first two Street Fighter films and the other containing widescreen (albeit cut) prints of "The Street Fighter's Last Revenge" and "Sister Street Fighter". These are all taken from laserdisc releases, and since so many "budget" companies are releasing these, my guess is that New Line never renewed the copyright for the films. As of now, there's a rumor spreading fast that an independant American DVD company (such as Pathfinder or Media Blasters, NOT like Brentwood or Diamond) may finally release all four of these Street Fighter films on DVD next year, in anamorphic widescreen with the original Japanese tracks and newly translated subtitles. This alone would be worth getting the DVDs for, but I'd love to see some extras, such as a Sonny Chiba interview. Anyway, guess we'll have to wait and see what happens...

As though my DVD collection doesn't already look a little weird with two copies of The Street Fighter...

The new boxset released in the UK contains Streetfighter, Return of the Streetfighter and Streetfighter's Last Revenge all in Japanese with optional English subtitles. They are uncut and enhanced for widescreen TVs. The set is region 2 though so check that You can play it before ordering it. It can be ordered from wwww.amazon.co.uk or www.play247.com

reply

Got them. They're good quality. No extras 'cept trailers for forthcoming Sonny Chiba releases, a biog and some stills (same extras on each disc). No English language option, which I personally wouldn't touch anyway (snob, I know...), but I know there are plenty out there who would rather have it. Nice to have the option, a la most Hong Kong Legends series releases, but you can't have everything, I suppose.

Anyhow, the prints are very good quality, and are uncut by the UK censors (check http://www.bbfc.co.uk/ if you're importing UK releases). Cost anywhere from ÂŁ17.95 (approx. $34 US) to ÂŁ24.99 (approx. $47 US) plus shipping, and are Region 2, PAL format. Given the individual titles are selling at ÂŁ12-ÂŁ15 each, the box set makes the best sense.

This is definitely one film that has had one too many DVD releases! I am interested in the 2 DVD set released by Platinum Disc that includes all four Street fighter films. Each disc is a double feature disc. I saw it for $10 at Best Buy and plan on picking it up. I've rented a platinum disc copy of Street Fighter from blockbuster and it looked fine. It also was the 92 minute "X" version with all that fun loving mindless violence! Anyone have this 2 DVD set?

I just purchased a 3-dvd set from CD Universe, with "Street Fighter" "Street Fighter's Last Revenge" and "Return Of The Street Fighter". The packaging says rated "R", English, Letterbox, total running time 4 hrs 10 mins with bonus features. It is released by Madacy Entertainment Group Ltd, and release date is 2004.

After reading through some of the other comments here I can only assume that what I have is not the uncut version of "Street Fighter", which sucks. Anyone knowing any more on the Madacy release I would love to hear from you, as I can't seem to find out much about it.

reply

yeah, i just bought the platinum box set. It's pretty good, actually 4 discs with one movie on each one. They just have regular size cases that hold two discs each. Not really any extras, except for a stupid quiz. I'd really like to see a lot of martial arts movies such as the streetfighter with a better audio/subtitles selection. I've got some great spaghetti westerns (django, the good the bad and the ugly) that have the original italian audio with subtitles and also the english dubbing. It'd be nice to see similar releases of martial arts films.

not too long ago i rented the streetfighter from hollywood video and it was the new line VHS release, with some quote from quentin tarantino on the box. it was a great widescreen quality, it'd be nice to see new line release the streetfighter movies on dvd, maybe tarantino could help out and use his status in hollywood to help get such a great movie series to the fans in a respectable fashion. while it is great that you can find copies of the streetfighter movies so cheap, you have to forfeit quality.

Hi, Everyone,

I got the 50 movie pack from Treeline for under $20 including shipping. It includes Street Fighter and Return of the Street Fighter. There is also a Jackie Chan and two Bruce Lees and two Lee Van Cleefs in this set. There are Bruce Li movies and Sister Street Fighter. A pretty good package. 4 movies per disc average. Two on each side. 12 discs total. I have not watched any except Street Fighter so far. It is a good copy with good sound.

I just bought a $5.50 3-DVD set from Wal-Mart, it has "The Street Fighter" at 90 min. (the only one I've watched so far-it's widescreen and digitally remastered-I think all the films are digitally remastered on it though), "Return Of The Street Fighter" at 82 min. , "Sister Street Fighter" at 80 min. , "The Real Bruce Lee" at 95 min. , "Bruce Lee: The Man, The Myth" at 90 min. , "Fist Of Fury" at 98 min. , "Shogun's Ninja" at 112 min. , "Ninja Wars" at 100 min. , "Rage Of The Masters" at 90 min. , biographies for both Bruce Lee & Sonny Chiba, and "The History Of Martial Arts". It says it's made by St. Clair Vision, the whole DVD set is rated "R", has Dolby 5.1 sound, & interactive menus (with music). It says on the back it was "Carefully Re-Masters For Best Possible Picture Quality". The year on it is 2004. At the top of the DVD case it boasts in black & white "Over 14 Hours", and the set's title is "Martial Arts Masters". Hope that helps.

Sincerely,
Exchronos

hey yonhope,

I was deciding whether or not to get that 50 movie pack, but I just want to know if alot of the movies in the collection are edited or cut. I'm hoping they're left alone because the movies I read about in that collection sound really great, but I would prefer if they were shown as they were made with violence and all. Anyway, I'm just wondering

reply

Hi, Mego Corp,

I think they are complete. I have not watched a lot of the Martial Arts collection yet, but at least one of them was obviously a wide screen that is shown as a square format. The titles say things that are funny. Instead of Directed By it might say irected b and lots of missing info. It makes the movies funnier for a bad movie night, but if you want good widescreen, this might not be the collection for you.

I am very happy with my 50 packs so far, especially the vintage Mystery and Action series. They were old square format mostly B&W adventures.
