Having an honest conversation with a classic: The shark also roared in the film

At the end.

Your mom roared at the end.

Don’t remember the shark roaring

reply

It did. The same dinosaur roar effect was used in Duel (1971) when the truck goes over the cliff.

reply

Can you post a YouTube link and tell me the exact moment when the shark roars?

reply

This particular sound effect was not a creation of Spielberg’s either but was taken from a 1950s horror film called “The Land Unknown”.

At around eighteen seconds into the video below, you can hear the dinosaur roar that would be used for Duel and then later reprised for Jaws.

What video? You didn’t post anything.

After it blows up and sinks to the bottom, there's a slight "roar" in the off. It is not really the shark, it's just a little Easter egg basically (Sound from Duel's truck).

reply

Gotcha, so within the context of the film the shark wasn’t actually roaring unlike in Jaws: The Revenge.

reply

I guess that is up for interpretation, but considering the shark was dead, blown to literal bits (the whole head at least), I think it is a bit silly to assume it actually roared. In my books, it was just an homage and creepy SFX, which worked well, I love that scene. If it would have actually roared, I guess it would have been louder and...more alive.

reply

The dead shark itself didn’t roar. It was a dinosaur sound Spielberg added for effect.

Same sound used when the truck went over the cliff in his 1971 TV film Duel.

reply

Spielberg liked that sound effect (I believe he lifted it from a 60s monster movie). He used it in the climax of Duel as well.

💯👍💯👍

Just watched the film again and no the shark didn’t roar. After the shark blows up you can hear a roaring sound as its carcass sinks into the ocean but that was clearly an artistic decision by Spielberg.

reply

I always took that for the sound of the shark's carcass grinding against coral, but it's definitely an artistic and otherworldly effect

I do know from someone who saw it that the shark DOES roar in "L'Ultimo Squalo," an 1981 trashy horror ripoff flick marketed as "Great White" in the U.S. It actually comes out of the water, freeze with its mouth open, and starts roaring.

It'd almost be worth seeing the flick to see that cheesy effect

EDIT: Found it on YouTube. Yup, the shark roars alright

I know what you're talking about, but that can't be the shark roaring since its head has been blown off. I always thought it was the sound of a ship sinking, which is timed with the shark's carcass plunging deep into the water.

reply

When the shark jumps out of the water (followed by Quint shooting it with the Harpoon) it roars.

I give less than a dry ethiopian-fart for the fact that it roars...the movie is still perfect.

I've always hated the moment when it growls. It's just after it's killed Quint and it comes smashing through the glass to get Brody. There's a growling sound as it's snapping it's mouth. They should've left that out.
